Uthorhil Material in Aliria | World Anvil

Uthorhil

Ore that was given to the party by the onyx dragon they saved in Unduum. Very Rare.   A metal made from Uthorhilium ore that can be crafted by a master smith. Its green-blue surface is smooth and reflective, warm to the touch on one side, and cold as ice on the other. Its strength is unmatched by any lesser metal and can stay sharp and sturdy for hundreds of years. Ancient Dwarven texts tell of vast veins found deep within the Turunak Mountains picked dry to help build their gargantuan cities beneath the stone and to craft legendary weapons with.

Properties

Material Characteristics

In its raw state, Uthorhilium ore shifts from green to green-blue shades in light. The ore is very resilient and takes a strong pick to break pieces of it from veins. Raw Ulthorhilian ore rarely has any sharp edges, even fresh from the vein small shards are more akin to smoothed pebbles than fragments of glass.   As a purified and smelted bar, Uthorhil shines with a green-blue hue like non-other. A bar of Uthorhil is often faked for its heavy value, but only pure bars have a surface smooth and reflective like still water.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Uthorhilium ore is often found near veins of flint, as such, it is often mislabeled as a spark-able ore but Uthorhil has no inherent ignitable properties. The raw ore is very cold on only one side, while the reverse side is exceedingly warm. This property is carried over to a purified bar, and anything that might be crafted with the bar.   Some smithies who have been lucky enough to work closely with Uthorhil and local mages have suggested that the ore is especially susceptive to magical influence.

Compounds

Uthorhil is a material that can be worked together with almost any other material to strengthen it. Often times smithies do not have the experience required for this delicate procedure, but there are writings of some who have. There is evidence of ancient craftsmen using Uthorhil and other common materials such as iron and steel to make more fearsome weapons and stronger foundations for their buildings.

Geology & Geography

It is very rare to come across enough Uthorhil to call a vein, and they are normally found deep within mountains. Found alongside flint veins, Uthorhil has mainly been found in coastal mountain ranges. Some Turukaar texts state that there were once monstrous deposits within their Turunak Mountains far from the sea, but any that has been found of late has come strickly from The Black Downs.

Origin & Source

Uthorhilium ore is the raw for of Uthorhil.

Life & Expiration

Scholarly texts suggest that Uthorhil can hold enchantments eternally, with no drawback, as well as maintain its strength for hundreds of years before any signs of deterioration.

History & Usage

Everyday use

If one can procure a substantial amount of Uthorhil they are most likely to use it to craft weapons given its indefinite rigidity. Less often it is used in conjunction with other more common ores and metals to imbue them with greater strength so they may be used in the building of structures. The most infrequent and least documented use for Uthorhil is to be smithed with a mage close by weaving spells into the metal.

Cultural Significance and Usage

Uthorhil is written most heavily in texts from ancient Dwarvish clans such as the Turukaar and the Cedarmantle who claimed to have found exuberant amounts of the ore and used it to build their tallest structures and craft their legendary weapons.

Refinement

Smelting at relatively normal furnace temperatures is required to refine the ore into workable bars.

Reusability & Recycling

Smiths have tried to reforge Uthorhil made weapons into new ones but have always failed. Some say a reforged Uthorhil weapon would be twice as strong undergoing the purifying process twice, others claim once the metal has cooled from being worked its strength does not allow for further work.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Uthorhil is an extremely rare metal, oftentimes found already smithed into a weapon rather than as an ore or unworked bar. Well-known armor and weaponsmiths in capital cities are known to have a few pieces, but always at a luxury price. Occasionally a wandering traveler is found selling a bar or two that they either stole or faked to try and scam fledgling adventurers.

Law & Regulation

In major capitals, all Uthorhil crafted items are mandated to be documented and officiated. They are to be bought and sold with their writ of authenticity in order to decrease fraudulent transactions with reputable merchants.
