Algols Tome of the Eternal
Long ago, when the strength of gods and deities was still fresh within the bindings of creation, those of the ancient races harnessed this energy freely to shape the world as they saw fit. Continents rose from the darkest depths of the ocean, bounty and plenty appeared where once there was not, and evil beings fled from the light to cower in twilight ichor realms. The world was new.
But, while the stewards of creation were themselves safe from the ravages of time, the same could not be said for the world they laid out before us. Bounty and plenty became greed and scarcity, powers that once founded nations instead turned to destroy them, and the light faded evermore from the world.
In an effort to save the fruits of their labor from themselves, a grand choice had to be made. The old gods stripped mortals of their power and instead placed it in the hands of beings created from their own energy; caretakers to watch over the world as best they could. Safe from the ruination of time, these wardens stand as protectors of the realm, ever bound to watch over the kingdom's of mortals but never themselves interpose.
Cut off from the light and power that once flowed through them, the mortal races continued their petty squabbles and bickering as the tales of ultimate power faded into myth and legend. But now in the year 938 of the Third Era, as darkness seeps back into the world, the walls between gods and men have began to crack. While few know it yet, forces already move to rediscover these lost powers and plunge the world back into calamity.
