Wizardbane

Wizardbane is a condition that affects mages of an arcane nature and can be passed on when a person with the disease casts a spell on a magical person. It has ravages the lands of Vaeteron and beyond many, many times.

Transmission & Vectors

The disease of Wizardbane is transmitted from a magical person to another magical person through them casting a spell on the target.

Symptoms

The first stage of Wizardbane manifests symptoms in two or three days. In the first stage, the afflicted person's eyes turn a bright purple, and they are unable to cast a spell of a level higher than a cantrip unless they succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw. In the second stage, after a week of contracting the disease, the afflicted person gets a -2 penalty to spell attack rolls until the disease is cured, and physical symptoms include a cold feeling whenever they cast a spell. In the third, penultimate stage of the disease, which comes about two months after the disease was contracted, the afflicted person's primary spellcasting ability score is reduced by 1d4. Afflicted people almost always die on the fourth stage, when they retreat into their mind and enter an unconscious state where they can't be awaken and die after about two weeks after the symptoms of this stage manifest.

Treatment

No known way was known to cure the condition until 2219 DA, when it was discovered that a strong herbal medicine could be made out of Starflower, found in the darkest parts of the world's forests, could stop the disease from making further progress and kill it over time.
