floating unmoored in the estuaries of time, the fragmented cities of an empty world are like tiny islands hidden just under the surface of water. an eternal twilight under a silent sky, with no wind to stir the dying grass in the crumbling parks under buildings that tower high, useless and empty. it was here that they discovered a way to disturb the substance that lies in the space between matter, the sea in which every thing and every universe swims, and attempted to harness its power. but in attempting to control this dark matter, the artificial reservoirs and dams keeping the aether amassed buckled under the strain of breaking the most basic of natural laws, and their creators were swallowed by a great flood. now these delicate scraps, carried by unfathomable tides to brush against other times and places, are all that is left of that world of alchemy.
