Session 0: The Final Exam
Kheldaxar, Anakis, and Mavra Bezarius gather with the rest of hopeful graduates from the Inquisitorial Academy to hear the headmaster, Xavier Santistevan speak. They are assigned as a team and told to meet with Orion LeSalle, who will be overseeing their work. When they go to meet Orion, they are informed of their final exam - investigate the disappearance of a caravan owned by a family of merchants in Yavhen, the Burgess family. While Anakis and Kheldexar head into town to investigate, Miv stays behind to ask Orion and the Captain of the Guard some questions. Anakis plays nice with the merchants in town, learning what she can about the dangers of the route, while Kheldexar leans on some shady contacts he'd cultivated in his youth to see if this could perhaps be the work of a criminal element in town.
Miv learns that bandits may plague the forest between Kaisu and the border of Vesmos, though the roads are typically safe. She also learns that in an effort to cut costs, the Burgess family's caravan traveled with fewer guards than recommended and took a more dangerous route. Anakis hears that bandits and goblins pose the biggest threat on the road, but more dangerous creatures, such as basilisks, do lurk the countryside. Kheldexar discovers that an unknown man from Isomor was seen meeting with a small, hooded figure outside the city, and spoke of the Burgess caravan. The guard who saw this clandestine meeting later turned up dead.
Armed with as much information as they could gather, the team heads to the caravan's first stop, a town called Damsen. While Miv speaks with the governor, Kheldexar and Anakis talk with the townsfolk. They learn that Lissa Burgess, the daughter of the Burgess family, was traveling alone, which was uncommon for her. They find out that Lissa had a paramour, Cole, who had a secret plan for her to escape her arranged marriage by hiding in a cabin not far from Damsen. Cole led them down the path Lissa was meant to take and to his horror, they discovered the caravan had been attacked by goblins. Lissa and her guards were all slain. Through Kheldexar's cunning and Anakis's impressive swordsmanship, they killed most of the goblins, though a few escaped and one was captured.
By searching the bodies, the party learned that the Goblins had been contracted by the Marcurious family to kill Lissa and her betrothed, Travis Whitmore. The goblin Boscoe, does not seem to know much information, however Kheldexar decides to keep him around as a criminal informant, dubbing him CryBaby for his fearful nature. Deciding that the greater issue of the contract, which now only includes people in Isomor, is beyond their jurisdiction, the party returns and reports to Orion. The next day, they receive letters commending them on passing their final exam and welcoming them officially into the Inquisitorial Order.
