The Queen's Champion

Although the head of the Westburn family is traditionally the man that stands for and protects the queen's honor, there has not been a true Queen's Champion since the Warrior Queen Alala refused to select one.   Because of Alala's refusal to name a champion, and her choice to instead stand in defense of her own honor, the family of the former queen's champion, Lord Glynn Westburn, retained the champion's estate and the official title of Queen's Champion was passed from Lord Glynn Westburn to his eldest son. The title has since been passed down through that family, becoming more of a honorary title for the caretakers of the estate than an actual title that requires the Queen's Champion to defend the Queen's honor.   This has created a bit of a political knot, where the Westburn family has encouraged their position as holders of the Queen's Champion title, with the Lord of the Westburn family stepping up at any tournaments or grand functions where the Queen's Champion is expected to attend. The truth is, however, that the Queen is able to grant the title to any she chooses should she feel that she is in need of a champion and that the Lord of Westburn is not able to meet the required duties of the title.   Since the Queen's Champion might need to face peers of the realm in combat, those granted the title of Queen's Champion are elevated by the King to the rank of a lord of the realm. In centuries past this came with the granting of an estate near the palace, but when Queen Alala refused to name a champion the estate, and the title, were kept by Lord Glynn Westburn, who passed both down to his eldest son. This means that the Westburn's have much to lose should they ever fail to convince the reigning Queen that their line is best suited to guard the Queen's Honor.
