The Chorus Reach
Migrant Settlements, Shamans and Pilgrims, Clear, Warm Seas.
The ancient home ranges of the Ghol and their floating villages is an area studded with seemingly endless tiny islands, as if a mountain range had been shattered and flung into the sea. In recent centuries, people from all over the archipelago have joined the Ghol, and several large towns flourish in the area. Floating from island to island, tending fields of coral and sea-weeds, in an endless circuit of the ruined Ancient Structures that lie half-submerged in the area. The Settlements of the Chorus Reach have no formal rulers, but Elder Shamans are well respected, and serious matters can be brought before the gathered wisdom of all Shamans at the yearly Moot.
While most Ghol prefer temporary settlements and a nomadic lifestyle, there are still those who build more permanent homes for themselves - usually platforms standing on tall stilts over the ocean, with simple walls of woven seaweed - these types of dwellings are often used as trading posts or lookouts. More elaborate dwellings are built near or in important Ancient Structures, making use of a variety of materials, chosen for their aesthetic beauty and connection to the location - driftwood, patterned cloth, giant conch shells and other, more esoteric materials. It is relatively rare for Ghol settlements to be planned out ahead of time, and they are a constantly shifting tapestry of arriving nomads, permanent residents who redecorate or remodel, and many dwellings are even designed to float on pontoons, so they can easily be moved to a different part of the settlement, or to another one altogether, at need.
Floating gardens are also a common sight in the settlements of the Reach, and often incorporate underwater gardens that hang from floating segments, or are anchored to the bottom where the seas are shallow enough. Many terrestrial plants are grown on these gardens, including quite large trees, often brought from the mangroves of the Archipelago, for their tolerance to seawater.
