Loftherbur

Loftherbur is one of the few cities to be built in the Swygian Reach so far, mainly by the industrious little hands of Halflings and Gnomes. This city is built at the bottom of a valley in the middle of what used to be wild plains but is now shielded with planted trees and farmland. It was a place to find shelter from the winds and eventually grew into a settlement, then a town. A fire destroyed many of the old wooden buildings some centuries ago and in an effort to avoid this happening again - and to use it as an opportunity to avoid the constant annoyance of moisture gathering at the bottom of the valley - the city was built anew in stone with cavernous reservoirs for water underneath.

Demographics

While a majority of the local populace is made up of Kinfolk, there are also Dwarves, Elves, and even the rare Goblinoid resident in the city. As long as they follow the rules of the city and cause no trouble, they are welcomed. As so, the city now also possesses the only mage school in the Swygian Reach. In total the city only has between 2400 and 3000 people living in it at any one time.

Defences

Lotherburh is also one of the only communities to have a standing military force, although for a long time it has been relegated to act as a city watch and not much more. There are some outposts on the plains, all of them within only a day's march outside the city, but they couldn't be considered as proper defensive forts by any imagination. While Kinfolk do have a tradition of military service, it has in most communities morphed into service as adventurers rather than a regimented army. In Loftherburh traditions of the more well-to-do families still maintain their military, as the sons especially are pushed to take part and even actively serve to climb the ranks. Although the military would no doubt be an effective fighting force if shoved into combat, the relative peace between communities in the Swygian Reach and the proactive nature of the Adventurers has started to show in the Lotherburh military as well. It is now very much an upper-class boys' club to make contacts in and utilize as a bargaining chip, rather than a truly dedicated strategic tool for the city.
