Gray spots

The students were already waiting for 20 minutes for their professor. As some of them already started to create an attendance list and ditch the class, the doors to the lecture hall opened. Tanya, the Doubled Witch entered the room, went up to the podium and turned towards the students. As always, she looked around at everyone, her brows furrowed angrily. She clicked with her tongue.
"Your current teacher, professor Haggard won't be able to teach you for the rest of the semester. But before some of you ungrateful slackers start to cheer, here's another news." Before she managed to say more, her sister, Lena, stepped out from behind her and took her place. She was nervous, fidgeting and stumbling over her words, something usual for her.
"Since professor Haggard is unavailable, we found you a replacement. Your next teacher of the history of magic will be professor Ellis."
On cue, a young man entered the room. He wore a short blue cape over his white shirt and black pants. A great braid of long, light blond hair stuck out from underneath his blue pointy hat with a wide brim. And yet, what drew the most attention, were his eyes. Both his irises and skin around his eyes were completely matte and gray. The so-called gray spots that touched his Blue Color nests.

Most sapient beings are capable of using Color magic, however those abilities tend to stay dormant until some specific requirements are met. For the majority of magic users, the thing that awakened their abilities was being put in some extremely distressful situation. A situation that couldn't end well for them without some miracle.
The first use of Color magic is always rough. Without practical knowledge, the Colors are released in their purest form true to the meaning of each Color. Without theoretical knowledge, the magic-user doesn't know that they can draw out Colors from around them, which results in them using their own resources, burning them out, and creating Gray spots.

Gray spots

Gray spots are discolorations that form on the surface areas of the body above the Color nests. In contrast to the bodies of Grays, which are completely devoid of any Color, said areas still produce and possess some Color, it just doesn't manifest itself visually.
Gray spots aren't harmful to the body in any way. They are not painful and the areas they affect aren't in any way less functional as long as they aren't used for Color magic.

Grayless Witches

The only way to get rid of the Gray spot is to be born as a Witch and awaken as one. Any Gray spots on the magic user's body who becomes a Witch disappear immediately and stop affecting them. Some Witches modify their appearance to show their old Gray spots, either to remember how they got them or as marks of honor.

Lost Color

The Color nest affected by a Gray spot will never be able to control the Color stored inside it. So ironically, the one Color that saved one's life in the past is the one Color they will never be able to use again.
