A Thousand Stones Stream

Log #13

"Per the order of the headmaster, I have been sent to collect the samples and the data from one of the sites located at Ketrella Mountain Range, more specifically at the Thousand Stones stream. We hope that the collected data could help us with developing new technologies that could help one survive in oversaturated areas."
Thousand Stones Stream is one of the shorter rivers of Ketrella Mountain Range at 4 km in length. Its source is located at the Shepherd's Mountain at 1152 m above sea level and it travels north, ending as a waterfall that pours into the Sleeping Lake. It is said that the rivers that feed the lake continue further as one, bigger, subterranean river. However, it is unknown if said hypothetical river rises back to the surface anywhere else.

Geography

"There seem to be no anomalies, nothing weird or unusual in the area surrounding the stream. Besides the affected area, everything on Shepherd's Mountain seems completely normal."
For the most part of the stream, the terrain it flows through is mountainous, marking the rushing river with multiple waterfalls. Around the 2nd km of the river, the terrain flattens, and the waters slow down for 1 km. In this part, the stream reaches its maximum depth of 2.8 meters. Farther, the stream once again goes down the mountainous terrain and ends at a 10-meter drop as a waterfall.

Thousand Stones

"Six years ago a group of 4 travelers noticed a mysterious glow coming from the calm part of the stream. Curious, they decided to check the source of the light. One of them died back then, while the other 3 notified the authorities of their discovery."
The bottom of the calm part of the stream is covered with over a thousand (1128 to be precise) oversaturated stones of all Colors put together in a very specific pattern which causes all of them to neutralize all effects of their oversaturation without depleting them of their Colors. It is completely certain that this is a work of a Witch, though it is unknown whether they transported already transformed stones to the area or changed and arranged the ones already present there.   The water above the stones is both safe to touch and for consumption and as long as none of the stones are touched, life can normally develop there. The stones can't be moved in any way as if they were stuck together, and even trying to do so is punishable and treated as an act of ecoterrorism. Even a short contact with only one of the stones can quickly lead to Oversaturation and death caused by multiple Colors.
Alternative Name(s)
Until six years ago - Old Ram's Stream (following the sheep-related naming of all rivers that start at Shepherd's Mountain)

Possible creator

There are rumors of young Witch living somewhere in the Ketrella Mountainside. Is it possible that she was the creator of the Thousand Stones Stream as it is today?

Tourist attraction

Lately, the stream became a tourist attraction, visited by people from different parts of the world. The sudden influx of money significantly accelerated the development of the nearby cities and villages. Seems like many people want to see the dangerous but beautiful patterns of the stones, many of them being scientists and magic users that want to discover their secrets.   Even if the number of deaths caused by accidental or non-accidental contact increased several times.
"Studying the change in the river and the resulting patterns of the stones may prove helpful in discovering how Colors interact with each other, without neutralizing themselves. In theory, that could even lead to the creation of things both resistant to Colors and retaining their properties."

This sounds like a good tourism spot indeed, as long as you're careful!

I like how this little thing has impacted the world in several ways--legally, economically, scientifically, etc.

Check out Natural Magic : a coming of age fantasy novel, because life is hard enough when you're fourteen, even without saving the world. Or listen to it in podcast form .
