Fimbulrike
Far; Beyond a Dragons talons Deep; Within a sparkling vein Tall; across a windy woodland Hear the roar of ovens grow Strong; Our spirits and our metals Grim; The fate of all our foes Blood and Struggle won us freedom Now we craft a new realm in our halls -Excerpt of Dwarfish worksong
Structure
Fimbulrike is fairly unique in its system of governance, as it is a Dual Elective Monarchy. Power is shared between the Mountain King and the Wandering King, who are both elected upon the death of the previous ones death by an Adelsting, a gathering of all the great houses of either the Dwarfs or the Jötnar. These twain Kings then rule their realm as they see fit, but convene and act as one in matters pertaining to the outside world, including negotiations and warfare. Internally the Kingdoms have their own feudal structures and are in practice autonomous, save for their combined economies.
Public Agenda
Fimbulrike was historically formed to protect itself along with the Jötun and Dwarfish peoples as a whole, a mission it upoholds to this day as its highest duty. When the northern dragons start stirring in their nests it is Fimbulrike that raises the call to arms and when its neigboring realms start rattling their weapons Fimbulrike is always there to mediate the dispute. In addition, it serves as an example and leading the way in relations between the historically at-odds dwarves and Jötnar.
Assets
Fimbulrike is a relatively barren land compared to most, the crop yield produced during the short summer months being barely able to feed the realm, but the hot and humid enviroments of the deep mountain caverns has allowed for a substantial amount of underground agriculture to develop. In addition, the surface is covered in vast tracts of forest tended to and harvested by a special group of Jötnar artisans who eschew the more nomadic lifestyle of their bretheren to produce enough fuel for the large underground smithies and machinery used by the Dwafs.
However, they have scarcely extracted Old Magic from the mountains since the end of the era of Giants along with the brutal Dwarfish Rebellions and the Thunder Wars. The Jötnar abhor the material that was used to kill so many of their kin and the Dwarfs for their part do not care for it much, seeing it as an alien and dangerous element to be used only in the direst of circumstances. This leaves them with perhaps one of the largest supplies of untapped Old Magic of Kontinent, giving them all the disadvantages of being a target for the power-hungry with none of the benefits. So far however, the region remains at peace.
History
The Twin Kingdoms came into existence following the last wars in the waning years of the Giant age. The wars had taken a toll on both the Dwarfish and Jötnar species who both subsequently saw the Dragons as their common enemy, putting their grudges aside for the good of both the Jötnar and Dwarfs.
It should be noted that the Jötnar of Fimbulrike were among the few of the Jötnar and Giant species in general who did not claim dominion over the mortal species for themselves but mostly kept to their semi-nomadic ways and where only drawn into conflict with the start of the Thunder Wars. Subsequently the regining King of the Jötnar named Enok Benbrak and the Dwarfish King Gjuter Segersäll forged an alliance that was soon tested and proven by combat following a Great Raid from the Northern Human Chiefdoms. This alliance eventually developed into a political union as the Dwarfs and Giants aided each other in matters other than war: A number of Jötnar now feed the Dwarfs insatiable need for fuel and in return the Dwarfs supply the Jötnar with fine stone for their traditional great stoneworks.
