Burial rites in the known world
Forest funeral
In the Phoaga Archipelago and West-IenasThe dead body is draped in plain white robes and then buried in such a way that the head is only covered by a few finger's breadth of earth. Before fully covering the body, a priest or an old family member drills a hole through the forehead and places a tree seed inside of it. This is usually done outside of the city or settlement, although richer families often have their own forest explicitly for this purpose.
This is done to symbolise the rebirth of the deceased in the Beyond.
Cremation
In some form throughout the known worldIn parts of the Kingdom of Ayel and Xakuma the ashes of the deceased are scattered in the wind atop a mountain, high tree or in rare cases a tower during the night. This way, the deceased is to be reunited with the stars and their relatives show that they are ready to move on.
In parts of Ayel, the northern colonies of Hokka and Marlund the ashes are collected in an urn or small chest and kept to worship in the family's house.
In the Phoaga Archipelago the ashes are sometimes used as soil to plant a tree.
Tombs and Mausoleums
In North-Ayel and the Kingdom of MarlundMostly done outside of cities and by more wealthy people. The place of burial is set up so that it can be visited easily and for as long as possible by the buried's descendants. The style of the monuments and buildings surrounding the grave varies greatly depending on culture and wealth of the deceased and is usually already erected during their lifetime, with them overseeing the construction. The burial rites are performed by a Priest, Missionary or Magician and the deceased are usually buried together with their valuable possessions, like clothes, jewelery and armor.
