Merilun

Merilun has always been obsessed with defence and survival; their lands have been attacked and devastated in the past through manipulations and sabotage, developing unhealthy xenophobia of any non-natives to their lands. Much of their land is preserved thanks to the double shielding of the Saltspire , North Break and South Break mountain ranges, followed by Heart Woods, The. In the wake of the Cataclysm, Merilish has become a byword for visiting terror and slaughter, their armies turning outwards to reap revenge and chaos for real or false insults over the ages.

Geography

The centre of Merilun is dominated by a sprawling range of hilly forest, known as the Heart Woods. The east and south decay into saltmarsh and swampland respectively, known as Bogmarche and Marshills. West of the mountains is formed of salt flats and deserts. During the winter months, the southernmost aspect will freeze over, though the Marshills rarely change and form the inland limitation to such changes.

Fauna & Flora

Little is known beyond what has been seen by ocean vessels passing the coastline and survive the trip. The lands are rich with plant and animal life, almost untouched now by the Calamity in appearance. Several coastal settlements have vanished, either razed to the ground or consumed by encroaching nature.   The animals of the island are assumed to have flourished to a similar level; at times, glimpses of large beasts can be made out at the edge of the woods, and ships passing around the southern coast have reported irregular sightings in the Marshills of bright, vibrant colours flickering through trees and swampland; reds, blues and yellows that come and go. The movement is too irregular to be swamp gas, but none have managed to ever find out what exactly these flashes of colour are.

Natural Resources

Rich in wood and sparse, but dense veins of ore, Merilun has put its enslaved forces to work in gathering what they need, but at the same time their work is self-sustaining. Word from rescued survivors suggests powerful operations in logging and mining, following the whims of nature. Old, dying trees are harvested, their seeds scattered to regrow the area while mines follow the path of the waterworn stone, natural fissures, and cave systems only.

History

Merilun has always been predominately a land split between war and paranoia. The dense forests developed a powerful Elven population who sought to preserve it, while the Dwarven and Human races desired Merilun for its mineral wealth. At the time, Kerulisan was as yet uncolonised, its mineral wealth largely unknown of; powerful wars and skirmished often occurred between those seeking to preserve or to harvest Merilun as a result.   The Cataclysm drastically changed this; much of the Human and Dwarven were destroyed or displaced and became unable to withstand the almost untouched Elven onslaught that came from the Heart Woods. With millennia of war and conflict, the Elves had twisted into vicious and cold people, slaying or enslaving those races left over. Now, they rule over an empire built on slavery and blood, regularly plying the oceans to slay or enslave.

Tourism

None travel to Merilun. Its people are xenophobic and paranoid, killing or capturing any who land on their shores. Few have survived and escaped over the centuries, and many of those who do fall to hunting parties, feral beasts, or exposure. Of the few who do survive, the tales they tell drive home the message: Merilun is Death.
