Universal Gear Item in Aerune | World Anvil

Universal Gear

Wondrous Item, Very Rare. Requires attunement.   This palm-sized toothed gear appears to have once been part of a larger machine. Its bronze-colored surface is both polished and tarnished in places. This gear is rumored to have been created by a high priestess of Ioun who wanted to better comprehend the intricacies of artifice. Merely possessing it bestows unnaturally intense curiosity upon the bearer.   While attuned to the Universal Gear, you gain the Mending cantrip, which you can cast using only verbal components on a visible object within 10 feet of you.   Additionally, you can attach the Universal Gear to any mechanical object by placing the gear on the machine and casting Mending on the two items to temporarily fuse them for up to 10 minutes. You can use an action to detach the Universal Gear before 10 minutes have passed.   For as long as the Universal Gear is fused to the machine, you have perfect knowledge of how the machine operates and how to use it, including how to operate a vehicle or mechanical weapon. If you attach the gear to the lock of a door or chest, you know what the key looks like, and you gain Advantage on all checks made to lock or unlock the mechanism. If you attach the gear to a mechanical trap (without triggering the trap), you know exactly how the trap is triggered, and you gain Advantage on all checks made to disarm or re-arm the trap.

Where is it now?

The Universal Gear remained one of the practical treasures of Ioun's temple in Elm Sheras for decades after its creation. It was transported to the continent of Feraweth for further exploration of kobold artifice when its bearer was murdered by unknown entities. The artifact vanished into the backwoods routes near the Warrentop Mountains, traded by bandits and traveling merchants.   Ioun's clergy sought the missing artifact, but a local fey god named Kratu challenged Ioun herself to a game of chance--with the gear as the prize. Kratu wanted the Universal Gear for himself to better understand the near-alien nature of mechanical artifice; Ioun sympathized with his desire for greater knowledge, so she agreed to the game. Kratu won.   The Universal Gear has not been seen since.
