Race: Warforged

General Description:
Warforged are living constructs who currently exist in only is one region of the world, the Jeweled City of Opal. Some thirty years ago, while exploring ancient gnome ruins in the Dustwall Mountains and Burning Sands the Artifice Master of Opal, known only as the Forgefather, came across evidence of intelligent and living constructs who served and lived along side the gnomes prior to their exodus. For many years he compiled clues and scoured ruins, delving deeper into sand buried vaults until can across basic plans for the creation of these living constructs. These appeared in a “historical text” and were for what was described as basic or even primitive examples. The text apparently hinted at great advances in construction and specialized builds that were in use at the time of the writing. Despite continued searching, plans for these have not been found.
Since that time, the Forgefather has created many of these basic living constructs, termed “warforged”. They are sentient and intelligent, free willed beings made of both organic, mechanical, and magic components. Those first constructs served their creator in making other warforged and in searching gnome ruins for more information. In the intervening years he has continued to create more and more warforged. To cover the costs, which are high, he “rents” them out as indentured servants to wealthy individuals in Opal and beyond. After serving for 20 years, their “debts” which were the cost to create them is paid and they are free to do as they will. Forgefather considers the warforged as his “children” and he is careful about whom he allows to command them. However, they were, at least initially, built for battle, and not all survive. Only in the last few years have their been “free” warforged and they are only now discovering what they, as a “people” will be like. Most remain in Opal but others have set up for other lands.
Warforged are an interesting mix of construct and humanoid. They have emotions, but these are only recognizable at the extremes. At their baselines, they are flat, mechanical and logical beings. Only certain instances or circumstances are likely to bring forth what most others would recognize as emotions- despair, rage, joy and even love. Warforged tend to be followers, independence and self assertions are not primary traits. Later generations are “educated” before their indentured begins which includes a sense of morale fight and wrong (best described as lawful neutral). Individuals, despite identical design, are different. They have different levels of emotion, thoughts and personality, although the range of would be considered restricted compared to other humanoids.
The Warforged are a common sight in Opal now, most are working as guards and occasionally as manual laborers. The reaction of the generally public is mixed, some see and treat them as just another humanoid species. Others treat them like objects, either with disinterest or without outright derision. For most, there is underlying feeling of suspicion and mistrust. Physical Appearance: Warforged are 6 ½ foot tall constructs made of leather, metal, and wood. They resemble humanoids in shape and function but appear like mobile suits of armor. Only recently have they taken to changing their forms and appearances to more easily distinguish each other. For the most part, this is limited to abstract designs on the shoulders, arms and head. Warforged are neither male nor female, although some adopt such an identity to better fit in with other races.
