Dragons

Creature- Aertrea.   Alignment: any (tend towards chaotic).   Knowledge Arcana.   Needs revision (DC 15) Dragons are by nature, independent creatures prone to greed and ego. They are very adaptable creatures and come in hundreds of types, sizes, and appearances. Many are neutrally aligned, caring for little else other than their own well being. Others are incredible forces of evil and destruction and a very few are paragons of good or law. They are innately magical creatures and often have well developed talents in that area. All Dragons breath fire but most have other breath weapons.   Dragons are not native to Aertrea. Modern dragons are descendants of the Draconian Anacestras of Aer. Their variability and arcane might is owed the Anas running through their veins. There were several god-like Anacestra who had draconic forms who reproduced their own shapes in the races and species they shaped. That initial generation and the first to be shaped upon reaching Aertrea are known as the Elemental Dragons. It is unknown how many of these entities existed but they were some of the most powerful of the Servi Prima. They in turn, shaped the species of dragon that is found on Aertrea. Their highly adaptable nature and elemental links means that dragons are highly individualized. Like snowflakes, no two are alike, if snowflakes could breath fire.   (DC 20) Dragons have no maximum age. They can live for a very long time. Because of this they are often have vast hordes of captured treasure, for dragons are very fond of precious metals, items of beauty and powerful magics. They also often have vast amounts of knowledge. The majority of dragons are also very social creatures and are found of conversation and company. However, dragons tend towards being greedy, arrogant, and quick to anger, as such they seldom can stand other dragons for very long. Therefore, some live lives of quiet solitude. Others surround themselves with slaves, servants or allies. Kobolds are a particular favorite. Dragons discovered a very interesting means of interacting with other dragons, something most seem to crave, without coming into actually proximity to each other. This is known as the “Dreaming”.   (DC 22) The Dreaming is a form of spiritual projection. While ‘asleep’ the dragon’s spirit is free to roam a strange dream realm inhabited mostly by the spirits of other dragons (although some dragons have hinted at other inhabitants). This realm allows the world’s dragons to meet with no chance for violence from envy, anger or past grudges. The Dragons socialize, make alliances, and trade information here. Little else is known of this realm or what goes on there, there are ancient legends of humanoids who entered this realm, either as the guest of some dragon or by forcing their way in. Dreaming, The   (DC 22) Dragons are basically immortal creatures, having no maximum age. They exist for vast amounts of time without food and water and can effectively hibernate for ages at a time. Most eventually do die, usually a violent death at the hands of powerful humanoids, giants, or other dragons. Some tire of this existence and transcend their mortal form to become planar dragons, dracolichs or other transformations. Still others wish for an end to their existence entirely and seek oblivion. Dragons have a long history of ‘death rituals’, a sort of arcane suicide that is often symbolic and spectacular at the same time. It’s thought that these rituals not only end the dragon’s life but perhaps also transform its spirit in some way.   (DC 25) “The Maddening” is a strange phenomenon that has plagued dragonkind for ages. This progressive madness strikes seemingly at random and no attempts to halt or reverse its damage has been successful. The wyrm affected slowly loses its higher intellectual functioning, becoming a simple creature that desires only to feed and destroy. Some such dragons are ‘put out of their misery by their fellow dragons’ when possible. Most continue their rampages until destroyed. Despite vast efforts the secrets of the Maddening remain unknown.   The elemental nature of dragons allows them to take on the traits of an environment that they are exposed to over time. A dragon who resides in the arctic will be unaffected by the cold, ice, snow, and darkness found there.
