Flatlands

The vast lowlands near the coast of Archana

Special thanks to Rosana Dos Santos Pinto for helping with the development of this region

Introduction

"We were lucky the Flatlands was such a fertile region. After the fall of Grave's Hollow, we could have gone starving if it wasn't for this land here!"
— a farmer near Blackbourne

Located at the North of the Archan Heartland, by the coast, as the name suggests the Flatlands is a vast lowlands region in the Kingdom of Archana, crossing the Heartland from the Tail to the North of the Head of the Serpent. These fertile lands have grown in importance since the fall of Esperbrook to the Blight, serving as the main farming lands for the Kingdom.

Geography

As the name suggests, the Flatlands are low altitude fields close to the coast. They reach all the way from the mountains to the West to the border in the East and approaching Hrastgar southwards. The rivers passing by towards the sea often flood the fields, bringing nutrients to the soil and favoring agriculture.

Fauna & Flora

The entirety of the Flatlands is covered with grass, so it is great for raising cattle. The nutrients from the floods also make this region's flora rich and varied, housing many species of plants. Mint, dandelion, aloe vera, thistle, myrtle, mushrooms, and berries are all common finds, especially near the largest rivers. Herbs usable for teas are also present naturally, but they are harder to come by. Willow and fig trees are sometimes seen by their lonesome in the fields, along with other species.

The Flatlands is mostly inhabited by smaller mammals such as rabbits, shrews, polecats, and squirrels. There are also some larger predators, such as foxes and boars. Owls, hawks, and swallow are more common towards inland, while storks, horned grebes, and other waterbirds are more common towards the sea and closer to the rivers. Insects can also be found all around.

Natural Resources

The fauna and flora are obvious sources of all kinds of materials and goods, especially as food, spices, and hide. But the main use of the Flatlands is its soil, rich in nutrients, which is a prime spot for agriculture. Both native plants from the region as well as other species are grown here by the farmers, such as wheat, rice, barley, lavender, jasmine, and pomegranate.
