The Orrery Theory; An Explanation On Planer Migration

While most accept the theory of the "Great Wheel" It fails to explain the fleeting nature of planer travel. Anywho study the arcana theory of the multiverse will tell you that that travel between the worlds is difficult and near imposable at times. Even the most experienced mages find it difficult to properly attune to the desired plane and travel to any success. A person could easily find themselves a large distance from there desired location or, worse displaced in the astral sea. According to the theory of the "Great Wheel," the planes are ever-present within their respected spots in the wheel. With these stationary planes, travel should be far easier (it is by no means an easy task nor will it ever be) than it is. An attunement fork should be able to accurately find it's attuned plane if it is truly stationary. But as we can see this is far from the case. This has led me to theorize that the planes are ever moving and ever-shifting. Much like the planets orbit, the sun does the planes orbit an unknown force.   This new model contends that the planes are not stationary but in fact, moving in a somewhat predictable pattern through the astral sea. Ever so often coming close enough for natural forms of travel to occur. Some planes orbits rarely cross our own so gates to these planes really open, these are what we call the outer planes. They orbit so far out on the orrery that we rarely come into contact with them and it takes a great deal of magic to travel there by natural means. I also propose that some planes are fully independent in their orbits. The main evidence for this is in fact our material plane and our two echoes, the Feywilds, and the Shadowfell. These two planes are in no means independent as they are reflections of our world. In the orrery, I would place nonindependent planes orbiting the connected plane. In our case, the Feywilds and the Shadowfell orbiting around us as the moons orbit the planet. This is the reason why to travel to these realms is relatively common and can be done frequently. They are always near us in orbit.   That brings me to my next point, travel is not constant. There are short periods where the gates between planes are open. They only open as we intersect, and depending on the plane that can be years in between openings. This is also why some spells to travel between the worlds miss fire. Of course, there is always a chance caster error (any true student of the arcana should know their own magical limits) but that is not always the case. Some of the most experienced wizards have failed a shift without making any such mistakes. They fail simply because the plane was too far out of there magical reach. This is also how some planer travels become trapped, the best example of this are demons that come from the abyssal plane and can not return.   We know of many races and creatures that have their origins amongst the other world. It is possible that many of them simply had no choice to stay in the material plane. As proof, I turn to the elves. The elves are descended from the fey folk and some still reside within the feywilds. As stated in Rola Chorsk's 'Interview with an ArchFey', "Some of the eladrin took to traveling throughout the newly opened gates. Some settled and these realms changed them. They became something new, they disconnected with the wild magic of the seasons, they sought a new light and new existence." Eladrin are elves native to the fey wilds and the direct fey ancestors to modern elves. As some elves immigrated to the material plane they evolved to better suit their environment. Some took to the forest others to the Underdark. Physical differences can be seen on the different variations of the race, proof of their evolution.   There are countless other creatures that we know came to this plane from another and evolved to suit its new environment. Here are some examples of these planer orphans:   Aarakocra, Aasimar, Beholder/Spectator, Doppleganger, Elves/Eladrin, Gith, Kuo-Toa, Mind Flayer, Vampire
