Apex-Cataract System

The tense ballet of gravity in which Aedrynn twirls.

The Apex-Cataract system is the star system within which Aedrynn itself resides. The system is actually composed of two stars and one substellar object; Apex and Cataract form the main binary with Ember tracing a wide orbit on the far outskirts of the barycenter's influence. The Apex and Ember subsystems were gravitationally captured by Cataract, with Apex arriving roughly fifteen million years ago and Ember being netted considerably later.  

Apex Subsystem

Apex is the G-type star that hosts Aedrynn and its sister planets. It is fairly average for a G-type star, lacking the anomalous magic flares of the red dwarf (Ember) on the distant edge of the system. The Apex subsystem has a total of six planets and one asteroid belt:
  • Chaxocatl, a small venusian world with a speedy orbit close in to Apex.
  • Kyujo, a scorched desert world with a thin atmosphere.
  • Aedrynn, the terran planet home to a wide diversity of life.
  • Qalipuk, an oceanic world with a dense and warm atmosphere.
  • Imn Akali (the Fragments), a debris disk delineating the inner and outer system.
  • Polu, a large and brilliant blue ice giant reminiscent of Neptune.
  • Mbatala, a small, pale neptunian ice giant on the fringe of the subsystem.
 

Cataract Subsystem

Cataract (aka the Darksun or the Eye of Xotl) is a fifteen-solar-mass black hole close to the approximate center of the Aedrynn system. Cataract and Apex share a gravitational barycenter, focused considerably closer to Cataract than Apex. Cataract’s accretion disk is quite large and bright, visible from Aedrynn day or night depending on where one stands on Aedrynn's surface. Cataract has one known planet: Jhynlae, a dark, dead rock whose orbit intersects the plane of the accretion disk at a very low angle.  

Ember

Ember is the far-flung M-type red dwarf star in the Apex-Cataract system. It is highly unusual, giving off considerable mana flares as well as excessive amounts of x-rays. Ember has no known planets.
