High Earl
High Earl is just beneath the King of Agranillis, serving as tax levier of the region, as well as crown judge in civil cases of dispute. Corruption is a common problem with this rank, but as long as the King is wise and good, he is swiftly removed once he is corrupted by the power. Many High Earls have perished in war, but this never proves to be a problem, as Agranillis replaces them with more military men.
Requirements
A High Earl can be anyone, but most of the time, he must be of a noble family, and have served in the King's Honor Guard in battle.
Appointment
The King appoints High Earls every time one dies, resigns, or is removed from said position. Typically the replacement is within a week, because of its importance.
Duties
High Earls must rule their portion of Agranillis with justice and peace. They act as crown judge in civil cases, lead the troops of the region in battle, levy taxes for the king, and defend the people from inside and outside threats.
Benefits
High Earls are compensated handsomely, raking in 5000 Gold Stravea every years, as well as 10% of all taxes. The Best Earls reinvest some of this into the military or infastructure of the cities, but this is not always the case.
Accoutrements & Equipment
High Earls are granted an arming sword with a sapphire blade, with a sheath of pure silver. It is purely decorative, and is never used in combat.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
The King may remove a High Earl from office whenever he desires, but he must be careful of backlash and/or revolt from the other Earls if he does so without proper reasoning.
History
The High Earl position was created when the King in Maplestall couldn't rule the land properly during times of war. There were originally four earls, but it was soon reduced to three when it became too much of the taxes removed from the royal treasury.
