Jugonshi Academy

Jugonshi Academy is a war magic school located in Illiwz, the capitol city of Kudinyana Kingdom.

History

Jugonshi Academy opened in 7770 as an imperial magic school. Most of the students who attended were in the imperial class or had strong ties with an imperial class member. A ten year program, graduated students were masters in the theoretical and practical applications of dragonkin magical traditions. They earned high wages acting as divinators, summoners, spellcasters, and advisors for wealthy folk of the kingdom.   The first building was destroyed in 8250 after the Battle of the Dragonlichs, which left Illiwz in shambles. It would be another fifty years until they opened their doors again. When Jugonshi Academy was rebuilt, the mission drastically changed.   Jugonshi Academy currently runs a one year program that focuses solely on practical application of war magic and strategy. Students who attend are members of the common or warrior-scholar classes. The only enrollment requirement is innate magical ability. More than just an enrollment requirement, all common-class citizens with innate magic must attend the Academy during their fifteenth year as recorded in the family register.
The sole use of combat magic has resulted in a loss of old draconic magic traditions and knowledge. However, some members of the imperial and scholar classes have been trying to piece together old documents to reclaim the ways of magic before war.

A Chaotic Year

Unlike a traditional academy, classrooms are considered obsolete at Jugonshi Academy. Up to 800 students attend the academy each year, although the space can only accommodate 500. Both free and mandatory, many wealthy students will rent a small room in the city, rather than dealing with the substandard, overcrowded conditions of the dorms. The gardens, typically a place to relax in dragonkin society, is instead a true-to-life battlefield. Littered with landmines, which instructors frequently forget to de-spell, many students suffer injuries just getting to class. Most will stick to the floating garden walkways, the only safe place-even if it takes a little longer--or fly between building.   During the first six months of the program, students focus only on battle magic. Little else happens but constant drills, classmate battles, and formation practice. There is no room for creativity, only perfecting the spells for the battlefield. Every action is scored, with the later three months being weighted to account for training.   During the second six months, classmates are divided according to their recorded talents. Students are divided between the saburai, who go to the battlefront; bushi, who protect the kingdom from within; and ninjja, who gather intel and infiltrate enemy camps. At this point, students focus more on strategies and simulations, while they continue to grow their magical rank.   There are no breaks at Jugonshi Academy. Students practice from sun-up until sundown with one hour off to eat. For the first few years of opening, there wasn't even a day off. But after the breakdown of an entire class, Jugonshi students now have one day for rest each week.

Leaving Jugonshi Academy

Students who successfully graduate from Jugonshi Academy receive three months leave (with the privilege of using the Jugonshi teleportation circle for travel) to get their family's affairs in order. This typically includes arranged marriages and household changes, as graduated students are promoted to the warrior class. After this, they must report to their new post.   Students who do not show enough magical aptitude must drop out and return home. The shame of this can be enough for some families, particularly those from wealthier backgrounds or the warrior-scholar class, to disown the student - leaving them clanless. However, for poorer families, the shame from the student's failure is tempered by the usefulness of having a magic user in their house, even if they can only do minor mending or charms.
Jugonshi Academy includes the battle hall, faculty building, student dormitories, and a large battlefield garden.   Jugonshi Academy is built with large wooden pillars that support an overhanging, sloped, tiled roof. Each room is at least thirty feet high, to accommodate for flying dragonkin. In addition to wooden stairs, there are railed openings, which allows for quick travel between floors.   The battle hall is five stories high and able to accommodate around 500 people at a time. Most of the walls are removable or can slide open. This allows for quick transformation between individual battle training and larger battle simulations. Both walls and floors are enchanted to be resistant to damage and eliminate sound from traveling outside the room. No desks or chairs are available in the battle hall, as the instructors expect students to memorize everything. Many students bring their own notebooks, scribbling quickly during the instructors brief explanations before battle.   The battlefield garden is used to simulate outdoor battle tactics, tracking, and calvary experience. It consists of a wooded area, an open plain, and an artificially constructed desert. There is also a large lake used for underwater tactics. After the first six months of training, off-duty troops will assist in the students' training by acting as the foot soldiers and Calvary the students are expected to lead.   The faculty building is off-limits to students and visitors, except when somebody has prior permission to use the teleportation circle located inside. Many wealthy folk come to Jugonshi Academy to use the teleportation circle, which connects to the main provinces of Kudinyana Kingdom. Money generated from their travels helps to fund the academy.
