Vuevecuria

Cities and towns are built and born for many purposes; some for production of goods, some for trade, some merely as a stop along the way to another. However Vuevecuria doesn't fall into any of these typical archetypes, as it was born and is to this day often used as a neutral location for settling disputes between the largely human populated region of Wearyn and the elves of Cast en-Nimbrethil, and to no surprise as such it's located at the very border of the two, if ever so slightly on Wearyn's side. As a place of gathering it later also developed into a town of carnivals and other celebrations, which has helped boost the economy of the town considerably.

History

Vuevecuria was first established around 120 AM after the Great Conflict between the elves and humans came to a close and the two sides sat down to make a deal and wrote down the terms of truce. This peace agreement was signed on top of the stump of an old, large oak tree, that still remains a focal point of the city to this day. Considering the difficulties of traveling between the two main bodies of continent in Achareon, the South Crimson Gulf and its island chain offered the only safe passage from one to the other, but that route would take traveles right through the elven territories. And so, before the agreement was established, this surge of humans in their territory was taken as an invasion attempt, and retaliated to accordingly. Thus, the peace agreement stipulated the terms according to which such trespassing was both permittable and mutually beneficial.   Ever since the signing of that treaty, at least on Western Achareon, whenever issues have flared up between the elves and the humans, or other races, Vuevecuria is typically considered the place to go in order to settle such matters. As such, it's also received a nickname of "The Town of Treaties".

Demographics

As one might guess, Vuevecuria is mostly populated by humans with a large elven minority group. In addition to these two, however, it is also home to some dwarves, some halflings and an odd tiefling to boot. Of course, during times of gatherings, whether for carnivals or signings of treaties, the town sees an even greater amount of variety in its populace, and as such its peoples have gotten used to representatives of all races, colors and ethnicities, and the culture within the settlement is generally one of acceptance. Even races that are typically hostile to one another can, with relative ease, enter the confines of the town and expect to get out in one piece, as the city guard is quick to intervene on any hostilities between individuals, no matter how small.   As for status or class, in Vuevecuria everyone is considered as equals, with very few minor exceptions. The Mayor of Vuevecuria and The Erudite of its Library are generally seen as superiors, above everyone else, and the sheriff and his guard hold an appropriate amount of authority over the denizens of the city in order to maintain order and peace. That aside, whether you're a born aristocrat, a member of a royal family or a lowly peasant, you're afforded the same rights and opportunities within the city's borders. This is made clear to everyone entering the city at the get-go and it was considered a necessary step to bring all parties to an equal level, to ensure the establishment of fair treaties, deals and contracts between the different sides, that both would seek to uphold to the best of their abilities.

Trade

At the end of the day Vuevecuria is a relatively small town with only about a thousand permanent residents, and as such the town is typically not a host to a great variety of stores and trade opportunities. The typical market stands full of fruits, vegetables and meats imported to the city from neighbouring settlements usually populate the city center, which is where most families find their daily produce. Nearby, along the main roads, one might find a couple general stores, a magic item store, the local smith working on his latest orders, as well as tailors, carpenters and leatherworkers offering their respective goods. All in all the wares available on an average day in Vuevecuria are just that, average; enough and perfectly suitable for getting by, but that's about it. However come time for the gatherings the town is so famous for, and the variety in wares all but quadruples, as merchants of all kinds swarm the streets from the other settlements near and far, eager to take advantage of the influx of people and potential new clientele, in hopes of expanding their businesses and reputation.   Although it should be said; because Vuevecuria is normally a fairly small town, these sudden and very temporary bursts of residents bring about them their share of issues. For one, the town traditionally only hosts but a single inn, the capacity of which is more than enough on your average Lamia but which is ill-suited to hosting such a massive number of people. To that end certain willing townspeople also offer their homes and beds as temporary lodgings for those who were left without a room at the inn, for a moderate fee of course. For those wishing not to take advantage of these housing opportunities, the city also has a park around the aforementioned old oak stump, and a separate walled area nearby, outside of the city's borders.

Architecture & Infrastructure

Vuevecuria could generally be split into two architectural types or districts. The "old town", or "hovels" as they are sometimes called, is a district made up of the first houses built post-Culling, at the dawn of the town. These simple buildings house most of the city's workers, from street sweepers to stable hands to waiters at the inn. Whilst their objective value is the same as some of the better off merchants of the town, wealth yet plays a role in how they live their lives. Some also consider certain individuals living in this area as simply lazy, unwilling to take up a profession and learn a craft, and thus choosing to live as they do. It should be pointed out, however, that even the old town is typically clean, orderly and overall a pleasant place to live, rather than the slums of certain other settlements.   The larger district in terms of architecture houses refined wooden buildings with blue tiled roofs and a more modern exterior. From the large Library at the heart of the city to the barracks of the city guard, they all sport the same general appearance. Of course, depending on the wealth and property of the owners of each of these buildings, their interiors can be wildly different and unique.   In terms of infrastructure, the town hosts three main roads; one leading east to the elven kingdoms of Cast en-Nimbrethil, one leading north to Wearyn — or the town of Greenbrook to be specific — and one leading south to the additional housing grounds, the town of Trovia and eventually the Angelum region.
