Garlon Telasin
Captain Garlon Telasin (a.k.a. "the Butcher")
A man of many faces, names, and occupations, Garlon Telasin is a Landsman that follows his own moral and ethical code. Born to what many would consider to be a whore, and raised at least partially by a man who was deeply involved with the Sharkfin Syndicate and who was most likely his father, Garlon has a code formed by his early life experiences.
The mother of Garlon Telasin was Alloine Telasin, the daughter of a high-ranking rival gang to the Sharkfin Syndicate known as the Black Vulture Clan. She was kidnapped in a raid by the Sharkfin Syndicate, and held for ransom. When her parents refused to ransom her, she was sold to Rabel Bosk. Allione was used frequently, and sometimes passed around when she displeased Bosk. After one 'infraction,' Bosk allowed a group of men to use Alloine as a reward, and she unfortunately did not survive the encounter. The boy Garlon saw the entire incident, he was seven years of age.
To the dubious credit of Rabel Bosk, he attempted to raise the boy. A brilliant boy, showing signs of the razor wit he would have as an adult even then, Garlon hated Rabel. He was also aware that he was an unacceptable sign of weakness to his mother's parents, who had never acknowleged his mother after her kidnapping. He kept his hatred a secret, waiting for a chance at revenge.
Originally apprenticed as a blacksmith after his mother's death, Garlon was exceptionally skilled at making light weapons by the age of ten. His Master made sure that the boy learned to use the weapons that he made for others. One might think that this was a terrible idea given that Garlon was basically friendless and alone, but the Master had a soft place in his heart for the boy. It was also true that the MasterSmith had also been the product of a kidnapped woman and a gangster, and that he had far more in common with Garlon than he ever would admit to the boy.
The MasterSmith also made sure that his erstwhile ward received an education. A few hours a day were spent teaching Garlon to read, write, and figure. The father figure made sure that Garlon understood as well as any ten year old how a business was run. This would be one of the things that made Garlon what he was later in his life.
Friendships were a challenge for Garlon. He was being raised in a family that was an enemy to his mother's clan, and no one forgot it, ever. He worked at the forge long hours, but there was one friend that no one noticed he made. The young daughter of Rabel Bosk, Eliaza. No one noticed that the two were becoming closer in Garlon's precious spare time, mostly because Elieaza's mother was more-or-less disinterested, and Rabel was busy. It wasn't until fall of Garlon's tenth year that anyone noticed at all that the ostensible half-siblings were acting like actual siblings.
There were the usual run-of-the-mill battles where Eliaza acted like a princess who had been wronged, and Garlon predictably acted like a young boy who wasn't getting his way, but even while this was going on, the two were becoming almost inseparable. The most amazing part of this relationship was that no one realized the two were close until it was too late. They knew all of each other's secrets, including Garlon's hatred of their father.
Telling, of course, was completely out of the question. Eliaza knew instinctively if anyone else knew Garlon's secrets that something bad would happen. Growing up as a child in the Sharkfin Syndicate didn't exactly lend itself to a very childlike childhood. While Garlon was working in the smithy, Eliaza was receiving an education and learning martial arts skills. They, of course, compared notes and techniques.
In Garlon's 13th year, he was working alone in the smithy when Rabel Bosk came in to complain about a nonexistent flaw in workmanship on a blade Garlon had produced. It was, of course, an excuse to beat the boy into submission. The unfortunate outcome for Bosk became a legend in the city of Nurola. It is said that he raised his hand and slapped the boy across the face, then continued to slap the boy until he fell. When Garlon got to his feet, he pulled a knife from his boot, and began slashing and stabbing at the leader of the Sharkfin Syndicate. When he was done, the corpse was barely recognizable as one of the Landsmen.
Garlon burned his clothing in the forge fire, washed himself thoroughly, and re-dressed in spare clothing he kept at the smithy. He left Bosk's body where it lay. He returned to his room, packed a few clothes and necessary items, left a note for Eliaza in a secret place only she knew, and ran. He made it to the port town of Satuigia, and managed to be taken on as a cabin boy for an experienced Captain who made intercontinental voyages, Captain Ibraham Jifari. It was a fortunate day for both Captain and cabin boy, and both only realized later how lucky both of them had been.
Over the next ten years, Garlon worked his way through every job that Ibraham had available on the ship. After Ibrahim realized the business acumen that Garlon had naturally and had moderate training in already, the captain developed it further. The accounts were handled mostly by Garlon by the time he was five-and-twenty, and in a moving ceremony, Ibrahim adopted the younger man as his son, since he had no other. Both parties took this seriously as both a personal and business transaction.
Currently, Garlon is the owner of a fleet of seagoing vessels along with his adoptive father, Ibrahim Jifari. He takes time occasionally when in the correct port towns to hunt down and eliminate leaders of both the Black Vultures and the Sharkfin Syndicate, occasionally leaving both organizations in chaos. He bears an understandable grudge toward both organizations. He is intelligent enough to make sure anything done publicly is seen as self-defense, but his years working aboard ship and fighting off pirates has left him agile, wiry, strong, and silent, with no fear of heights. His grudge is covertly encouraged by his adoptive father due to the fact that both crime syndicates maintain pirate vessels. His forays into street justice and his reputation for limited mercy when attacked by pirate vessels have earned him the nicknames "Garlon the Butcher," and "The Reaper of Souls." He wears both titles proudly.

Ibrahim met Garlon when the boy applied as a seaman on Ibrahim's ship. The 13 year old had a look about him that showed Ibrahim he would do what was needed, no matter what. He couldn't use a non-experienced sailor, but he did hire Garlon on as a cabin boy.
