Welcome to Vardania!

Greetings traveller! Truly you must be far from home to reach these shores. Where you are exactly? Well, traveller, your journey has brought you to the ancient lands of Vardania! However, if you have come in search of peace and relaxation or simply exploration... I suggest you come another time. Vardania is a land in turmoil. For over a decade now it has been caught in War's iron grip.   The empire has fallen. A great Dynasty burns and Tyrants rule over the ashes. The light of civilization dims. Shadows grow as ambition poisons the minds of men. And harmony shatters in the flames of war.   Yet from the cinders, new forces emerge. Powerful, righteous, ruthless, cruel, kind, zealous. Each in their own way they will determine the fate of this tormented continent.

Who am I?

Hello there! My name is Darkseid and I am a fan of literature of all kinds (from fantasy to thriller) and especially of the works of Tolkien, GRR Martin, Dan Abnett and Markus Heitz. Additionally I am fascinated by history, language, geology and a whole lot of other things. Over the course of several years, it has become a hobby of mine to create all manners of worlds, nations, cultures and creatures. And now thanks to World Anvil, I can finally do that in an organized manner.

What is Vardania?

Vardania is a world that I've been building in my head for a few years now. A fantasy world in the vein of Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, where magic has seemingly died out following a cataclysmic event that shattered the world in ancient past. Influences come from all over the globe and from all periods of history. From classical antiquity, medieval/renaissance western Europe to more obscure eastern Europe, imperial China and even far away Mesoamerica.   While Vardania itself is only a single continent in a wider world, it is the main focal point. It is a land in chaos, a scenario inspired by the Fall of Rome and the End of the Empire in Star Wars Legends.   A look into a land without order or authority, where fledgeling nations try to rise from the ashes while warlords battle over what has remained of imperial wealth. A new age has come, one full of hope and despair, ambition and deceit, greed and faith. The current conflict, however, is only the latest consequence of a millennia-old war between to cultures:
  • Vardanians: As ancient as they are proud these people, influenced by the late Roman empire, have been through many tribulations. Having witnessed their Empire collapse around them, they look uncertainly into a future of civil war and foreign rule.

  • Ferans: Fueled by faith and chivalry and inspired by medieval/renaissance eastern Europe, they arrived from foreign lands in ancient times. Vardania or Feranar as they call it, is their promised land and for over two millennia they have bled to see it realised. With the empire fallen the time has finally come, the prophecised High Kingdom will rise once more!
Writing and worldbuilding are hobbies of mine and my main intention here on WA was and is to see Vardania realized outside of my own thoughts. Of course, any feedback and criticism are welcome as I strive to continuously improve my writing.   I came here to play around with my own little world and history and if I can create something in the process which people enjoy, all the better!

Really excited to see more articles about Vardania! I was intrigued by your descriptions of Vardania and Feranar toward the end! Sounds like a volatile situation perfect for storytelling! I understand you're still working on this article: I might suggest a map, and either a sidebar or splitting what you have into columns? Just because most of your paragraphs look a bit short since they go all the way across the screen.
I'm a little curious what the end goal is. Are you writing a book? DnD campaign? Is there an Earth time period that's similar to the technological time period of Vardania? Are there recurring/important themes touched on in your work? Are there important characters or historical figures?
I see you have a section for links when you have them ready; that's great! I might also intersperse some block links throughout the article or in the sidebar as important topics come up or add images to break up the text a little bit and add a little visual flare!

For you see Vardania is a land in turmoil. For over a decade now it has been caught in War's iron grip.

I might suggest starting one of these sentences with a different word or spreading them out some.

Powerful, righteous, ruthless, cruel, kind, zealous they will determine the fate of this tormented continent.

Kind of a strange sentence. I might consider reworking the list into its own sentence maybe? Or at least splitting the second half into a more complete thought I suppose.

Hello there, my name is Darkseid. A fan of literature of all kinds (from fantasy to thriller) and especially of the works of Tolkien, GRR Martin, Dan Abnett and Markus Heitz.

The second sentence here isn't a complete sentence on its own - "I am a fan of..." or maybe split off "Hello there" and then add to "My name is Darkseid"? Lots of ways to go about making this a complete thought.

Fascinated by history, language, geology and a whole lot of other things.

Again, this isn't a complete sentence. "I am fascinated...", and again lots of different ways to fix

Overall I think you have a great start! You've definitely piqued my interest for Vardania!

A bit late but I wanted to thank you for the feedback! I have reworked some of the text with your comments in mind and have to agree, they flow much better now. As for the more artistic stuff I will deal with on a later date. Atm I am in a strange mood between wanting to write and not really having the energy or interest for it (with a few exceptions). I am gonna let it rest for a while, probably even after Summer Camp and go in with renewed interest. Still I will use your comments to assist me then.   So again thank you for your comments and your interest! It means a lot to me!
