Monaton Cube Item in A Quiet Realm - Prostesa | World Anvil

Monaton Cube

“Originality is just re-flavored imitation… unless you’re me.”
- The Gearfather
Found in the rubble of what used to be a town called Amberhold was a silver cube untouched by the destruction. Teams sent to begin reconstructing the town told of strange noises coming from within—most of which were low, droning tones. Far too advanced for even the most knowledgable of factions on Unis, it was later brought over to Prostesa for inspection, but all tests seemed inconclusive. Then one day, the cube found itself in the hands of Mortimer MacRikos.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Magical Reactivity

One of the most noticeable things about the cube was its attraction to magical objects, species, and phenomena. It has displayed the ability to move of its own accord by slowly rolling much like how a die would, but it only ever moves when in the presence of magic.   When the cube is close enough to any particular source of magic, a notch (which is present on all sides of the cube) slides open and releases a mechanical hand which either scans or retrieves the object if it is small enough. It is unknown what happens to the objects once they are taken by the cube. The cube is capable of distinguishing varying degrees of magical power and will pursue the object, person, or phenomenon that exudes the strongest energy.   A test was performed to measure the consistency of the cube’s magical detection. Three objects were placed in front of the cube: a spell scroll containing Wish, the spellbook of an amateur mage, and a shard of rhupite that was just the right size to fit snugly in an adult human’s palm. No matter the cube’s relative position to these three items, it would find its way over to the rhupite shard and store it away.   The detection range of the cube is approximately two miles (3.2km).

Significance

The cube itself is sapient, though to what extent was not known until it had consumed an (unfortunately) unmeasured amount of magical objects. Though there are six main notches on each side of the cube, there are also much smaller indentations that connect each notch to the next.   These indentations parted randomly one day and formed a mechanical, humanoid creature, revealing that the cube itself was a construct akin to the modrons of Mechanus. It displayed similar mannerisms, though it is still unknown where it sits in the modron hierarchy.     The construct calls itself a “Monaton,” a product of a godlike entity known as the “Gearmaster.” Mortimer has noted that there is no known deity called the “Gearmaster,” so it is perhaps a title taken on by a particularly powerful engineer. The Monaton displays signs of clairvoyance, though it appears to only be capable of foreseeing immediate events that occur within the span of a day. Without intervention, these predictions are completely accurate.   Further tests are to be done.
