The people of Murray know how to have a good time. I'm quite enjoying this festival even if I do not completely understand all of their customs just yet. On one hand they seem quite sophisticated to join the removal of trash with the rejuvenation of the land, this is truly something my family would love to witness. However it does sour my mood knowing that the land will be immediately sowed again as they plant more seed. Who am I to question their actions though. I am still just a stranger to these lands and the generosity these people have showed me warms my cold heart.
Speaking of cold, that was certainly not something I expected to feel in the middle of the spring festival. We were caught off guard by that wizards attack. I thought I held a chill in my heart but I suppose its always worse for someone else. I'm glad that we were able to put an end to that encounter before anyone was hurt. This certainly acts a stark reminder that when we are on the job anything can happen. It dreads me to think what might have happened from our negligence. This is something I should raise with the others. I don't have issue with having a good time, but we should choose those times carefully.
The night certainly ended with a splash. The events happened so quickly its hard for me to remember the details. That may be do to that drug we all took though rather that the pace of events. The culmination leading to that man appearing in the flames was something I would have never expected. "The time from the end is nearly equal to the time from the beginning. The great conjunction is underway. Pathways and doors are opening once again. Bring forth the champions of the gods for they are the key." I have never heard something such as this before and I can't but help ponder these words. The tone is certainly ominous but does end with some hope. Only time will tell the true meaning behind this prophecy.
A Romp Around Murray

Thrazmoc is something else. I'm not sure if its my own biases or if I just have a predisposition against warriors but I found myself continually surprised by his abilities. To come up with such an incredible distraction at the drop of the hat, have the pull with the seaman, and luck to not get caught is nothing but amazing. And Gwenmyla has thoroughly removed any image I previously had of how a princess might act. She certainly was able to hold her own in their game. I do wish that I could have participated as it looked like a joy. I'm fairly certain though that my luck would run it's course and my quick feet wouldn't be enough to keep me unharmed. Only takes a loose patch of gravel for me to not dodge out of the way and end up with a broken rib or two. Maybe if Danis joined in I wouldn't be at such a disadvantage against the dwarves.
The plan went off without a hitch. Although I may not care much for Gwendylen I can certainly see some of her skill. To follow in Danis steps without getting caught must be extremely challenging. I couldn't see inside but hopefully my invisibility on her made a difference. No matter what happened inside, they did come back out without causing too much of a ruckus so that certainly counts as a successful operation. What they found was concerning though. This CERN organization has a lot of power to do business with several guilds without the Master of Coin finding out. I can't imagine the challenge of pulling something like that off without even one person tipping him off. Something to think on further but as for now I will leave the action of further investigation to Rowan.
I do hope that Riggu takes the job. The Woodcutters District needs a compassionate touch right now. The guild is functional but there is no life there in its current state. A man who fights against poverty at his own expense while still remaining in business is the perfect person for the job, and also someone who may have no desire to hold a leadership position unfortunately. From the little time we have spent with him I'm not certain to what Riggu will decide. Maybe we will stop by in a few days and see how he's doing.
Conflicting Opinions

Well turns out I was correct in assuming some members of the Wood Cutters Guild turned to robbing their own kind. I can only imagine the mental gymnastics these people must have gone through to think stealing shipments from other members of the guild would lead to any significant change in the upper management of the guild structure. It is very fortunate that it was our Unit that was sent to handle this as I think any other squad of soldiers would have slaughtered them all on the side of the road. They do seem to be blinded by their hate of the Guild Leader as there wasn't any recognition of the position they put themselves into. After incapacitating over half their numbers and then Thrazmoc's single attack almost fatally wounding one of their own they still did not appreciate that our Unit had the upper hand. They went as far as to suggest we were prisoners after we voluntarily laid down our arms. This group is desperate and blinded by their cause. I have deep pity for the position they are in, but I do fully realize what they are being put through is unjust.
Danis says we are tools for the King's Court. That we fallow orders, do as we are told, and fulfill the missions that are provided to us. When we were assigned this job I imagined it as something similar to hero's for hire. Our Unit would be the one's responsible for taking on tasks too dangerous for the common soldier and protect the people of this land. Everything leading up to this mission has been hinting at this path and it's only now that I feel my opinion swaying. I'm happy to receive orders to take down monsters or bandits that may be harassing those on the road but when it turns out that those committing the banditry turns out the be the oppressed people of the land I can't help but pause. Is it right for our Unit to stomp a resistance like this out? Is it Just?
I am relieved that we are pursuing the trail of corruption laid before us. All second hand evidence is pointing towards the Guild Leader, Keldon, as having committed acts of corruption for his own personal gain. To have any real proof we will need first hand or physical evidence of his crimes which comes with a great risk to ourselves and the people of the wood cutters guild. All of our actions from this point further are dependent on the reliability of Gwendolyn Glorybluff's claims that the evidence is locked in Keldon's office. If she is incorrect then we may be forced to flee Murray. I do not fully understand this women. She is young, spirited and fights for what she believes in and yet I can't help but dislike her. Maybe it is her youth that makes her so prideful, or possibly the adversity of being a young single mother. No matter the case she is brash with us and can't seem to word her request for aid without putting on an air of superiority towards us. I am a little surprised that Danis did not walk away from the mission of helping these people rather than just taking the information of the bandits back to the Master of Coin after being slapped by Gwendolyn. If it wasn't for Riggu I would have left the meeting abruptly as well. In fact Riggu seems to be the cornerstone of the entire district and I believe without his presence their may have been a more significant uprising long before these events. I will need to observe further to see the full ramifications of his presence in these parts to have a better understanding of how a simple barkeep came to have such authority here. Maybe he would be a suitable replacement for a disposed Keldon? Would be valuable to have a replacement immediately available if we do end up finding evidence of Keldon's corruption.
I do hope that our Unit can find some common ground with Gwendolyn. With the current conflict between us I fear that our teamwork may be compromised going into this next stage of the mission. While our team is still new I feel that we are taking steps towards working around each others strengths and weaknesses. Throwing in a hot headed person such as Gwendoyln will certainly shake things up and maybe not for the best. I'm hope that dawn will shine on us favorable tomorrow.
Who Steals Wood?

Thankfully the effects of the Mind Flayers magic only lasted the one night. My head finally cleared up in the morning and was able to think critically again. I'm not too surprised that Lucy was initially skeptical in regards to our unit encountering one of those creatures. I knew they were rare and haven't been seen in many centuries but I was not aware they hadn't been seen since the destruction of the World Tree. This may be an ill omen for the future. I'm not entirely convinced this kingdom is equipped to deal with a Mind Flayer incursion. For now though we will just have to wait and see what other intelligence Lucy is able to gather. With luck this was just a singularity and we won't have to deal with them again.
With a week of downtime I thought we would have some time to rest and possibly do some research. Unfortunately I was only able to get a few hours in the library they have here at the citadel. But what an incredible library! Oh how I wish we had this resource when I was younger; but knowing my younger self I doubt I would have even utilized it to its fullest potential. I will not squander this resource now that it has been presented to me. It has already provided some amazing value! If the only unrestricted book on Mind Flayers available to me detailed the reproductive cycle of these beings then I can only wonder on the knowledge that is being restricted. Hopefully the meeting with the High Priest on the 21st of 2nd will go well and we will be granted further access. If it goes poorly maybe I can use Lucy's influence to pull some weight and be granted access. That will be a secondary plan of course as the best way to gather knowledge is to be in the good graces of both the High Priest and Asmodeus. If all else fails maybe Danis can provide some clandestine support. He does seem fairly nimble with his hands, and wonder if there may be some other skills that he hasn't share with us yet...
I almost didn't recognize Thrazmoc when we met up again. I believe that he embodies the idiom 'Cleans up Nicely'. The smell is a tremendous improvement, though I shouldn't be so offhand with his presentation. I should probably follow in his place and find somewhere to get cleaned up as well. The smell of fish seems to still cling to me. I'm sure my tutors would have a field day with me if they were to see me (or smell me) as I am now. I will take inspiration from Thrazmoc's transformation and follow suit. There must be some baths somewhere in this town.
We have only completed one operation so far and been active for a few days and we are already being head hunted by others of the Kings Court. Rowan Steel, Master of Coin, seems to be a pleasant enough person. From first impressions he does appear to be greedy or lavish enough to fill the master of coin role. It seems well earned though if his rise to power is true. I can certainly respect someone who earned their place through both hard work and the knowledge to leverage that gain. I'm eager to see what types of assignments we will be given from him. So far it appears we are on another assignment to prove our worth with this banditry job.
I am a bit skeptical on the actual nature of this banditry though. Wagons going missing on the road isn't anything new and I've certainly been on enough missions to patrol trade routes to recognize actual banditry and piracy. This isn't one of them. No one has died, been kidnapped or seriously wounded. In addition whoever is responsible is destroying some of the goods which just doesn't make sense. Why go out of your way to destroy loot? I do not know the answer to this but we will likely find out. The rumors we heard today saying that the wood cutters guild may be facing some corruption may give some credit to this not being a normal bandit operation. If the woodcutters themselves can't feed their families or even themselves with the increased taxes on the goods harvested then maybe the ones committing the crimes are the workers themselves. It would certainly explain why Riggu wants to see the party responsible before being presented to either Keldon or Rowan. I find it odd that I'm actually hoping there are bandits on the road rather than any alternative. Will probably be the last time I hope for such a thing. If its not the last time then this world is certainly becoming something foreign to me.
I wonder if the dwarves have any trouble with bandits where they come from. They certainly export enough raw materials to make them a target and yet I never hear tales of them being hit. Then again I suppose I did live most my life secluded from the rest of the world. My ignorance of the world continues to shine through. Maybe someday we will actually travel to their homeland and I can find out for myself. I think I would like that....
The Minds of Children

Today did not go well.
I woke up this morning excited for the next chapter of my life but it's still just all the same. This new job was supposed to be something different, something more interesting... meaningful. But all I got out of it was despair. I'm getting ahead of myself though. I must maintain my record as objectively as I can despite my mental state.
It seems that Miss Flow-Kit is even less trusting than I first thought. Was quite the surprise when Sparky and Clank first showed up. That entrance was incredibly fool hardy and I'm surprised that no one was seriously hurt from that encounter. Casting spells and attacking, even soft attacks as they were, is a good way to get a sword in the back. Maybe he's just crazy, but I seriously hope that this trend doesn't continue. I do not want to meet my fate as a result of some ill planned actions such as attacking a fully armed adventuring party. I do have to concede regarding his skill though. Combining Sparky, a metallic automaton, and heat metal as an offense tactic is brilliant. I wonder if I would have thought of such a thing if I had pursued a different art? Oh well, no need to waste thought towards that possibility. It was certainly handed for our encounters this evening though.
Defeating the troglodytes and cyclops was nothing. These creatures demonstrated that they would continue trapping and/or hunting people and needed to be put down. Our team was able to respond rapidly to the threat and put them down before we suffered to much damage. Honestly after this first encounter I thought that would be it. To me it seemed as if we defeated the grunts which triggered the 'leader' to come face us itself. All very typical of low intelligence monsters. How wrong I was...
Moving through the cave did improve my overall attitude toward our team. Despite the strong personalities in this group we were able to combine our skills and clear each corner as it presented itself. Teasdale did seem quite pleased with themselves after being given a ride on that mechanical dog. I will have to have a word with them about their pride if they continues with that mindset. Nothing good can come from that mentality, and even poses some danger when faced with such a distance to the homeland. Regardless I may speak with Clank to discuss some further strategies between Teasdale and Sparky.
I find myself struggling to continue writing at this point. I do not take pleasure in recounting these final details but I do find it necessary to face some sort of closure. Maybe if I keep telling myself that it will finally become true. One can hope. Seeing the bodies of those children through the keen eyes of Teasdale was too much. Even though I know I'm not supposed to be ashamed from an action such as screaming the way I did I still can't help but feel slightly ashamed of the way I reacted. I've thought that with some of the things I've seen that I would be more desensitized to this scene but I guess not. Maybe if we had been a little quicker at at reaching the downs we could have made a difference. Maybe if we had found more evidence or clues we could have made more haste. Maybe there was nothing that we could have ever done and this is what we were always destined to find...
The locked door could have been handled a little more gracefully. Clank's and Thrazmoc's solution to the riddle was quite efficient did leave a fairly annoying slow down in our path. I suppose I am biased with the clarity of hind sight so I shouldn't be too critical. It did get us into the final room with that thing.
And I suppose that's really all I can really call it. I was able to piece together the nature of that creature from the others descriptions but I'm furious that I was knocked unconscious before I could even make a move. I still have a splitting headache as I write this. I'm hoping that my head will clear by the morning. A clear head won't be enough to respond to the threat of this mindflayer though. I will need to search this town for some supplies, but more importantly gather some intelligence on the history of their race. I'm extremely surprised that one could have fed on so many minds before its presence was found in such a large city. I need to prepare completely so that the next time I face one won't end with me face first in the ground. Maybe next time I will actually be able to save those that I'm tasked with rescuing. I don't like that this is becoming a pattern...
Those poor children. I dread to know what will become of them. The actions of this mind flayer will not be forgiven. I truly hope that this current team can go the distance as we will surly face unfathomable danger if this first mission is any indicator. I'm sure tomorrow will bring our next mission but until then I will try to steal a few hours of sleep if I'm able.
First Day on the Job
17th of 2nd, 2498
Today marks the first day of my new career. I'm very interested to see where this new road takes me. I've been able to get by off odd jobs up to this point in Murray but it hasn't been very fulfilling. This morning was a great example. I helped an older fisher-woman for a short while and made 6 copper, but to what benefit?? She would have been able to get the job done well enough without me so what value did I actually add. I'm not entirely sure but I'm hoping this new job is a little more meaningful.
The first meeting with my new team seems to have gone well enough. Our commanding officer appears to be this intimidating halfling claiming to be the Master of Secrets to the king. I will need to look into this and make sure she's not just a figure head. Even with her short stature, he presence makes her seem like she commands the room so I do concede her that. I will need to make sure I don't let my mouth get away from me and show any undo disrespect. The mission we were given does hold great importance. Even though she said this was just a introductory bonding mission for our team I do hope we can find these missing children unharmed. Hopefully we can accomplish this without any deaths in our party. What was that comment saying Squad 66 was killed? I will need to ask Danis about that. Appears we are just the 67th in a long line of squads.
Speaking of Danis, he appears to be very capable. As direct reports to him I hope we can receive sufficient leadership although I'm doubtful until I see some solid evidence. His personality is a little aloof and shifty. I'm hoping he doesn't have any hidden motives but I will probably be disappointed. In this line of work I'm sure everyone has hidden motives. At the very least his experience with the previous squads should help prevent any untimely deaths.
The other members of our team are quite the pair. Gwenmyla and Thrazmoc both look very capable and can handle themselves in a battle but I'm not sure how this will help in covert missions. Thrazmoc particularly doesn't seem very sneaky but maybe I'm too quick to judge. I will need to observe their abilities closely and see where their strengths and weakness are. I do need to make a more focused attempt not too be disrespectful. In my attempt to have a little fun with Thrazmoc I unknowingly touched on a dark past. Gwenmyla mentioned that he is the last of his kind or clan. I concede I do not know much of their past or the history of the dwarves entirely. I will focus my next research trip to focus on the culture and history of their people so I may understand a little more clearly. In the meantime hopefully I can avoid making any more stupid mistakes.
While we were following a lead at the One Eyed Gypsy tavern we were able to see a story teller how emphasized his speech with smoke. Both the presentation and content of the story was quite incredible however didn't seem to know anything useful on our current mission. He declared himself a sage. Maybe he can be an asset to further missions. Only time will tell but may be challenging to even find him again. I consider myself quite skilled in the art of illusion but he seemed to have a power beyond my ability to control reality. The smoke seemed to move to his will and the fact that he was then able to disappear without a trace was quite impressive. I may have something to learn beyond just mythology of this kingdom.
Finding these kids does seem to be going well. Whoever is doing this doesn't appear to be hiding their trail very well. Even with little evidence the total amount of people it has impacted makes the questioning of people quite easy. So far it appears to be some person or creature using the water as a hiding place or a means of travel. The lead we have with Tamara's child is very promising. I'm not sure what we will find at the downs but our path is clear. We will need to inspect the trail closely and see if any hideouts or hidden paths can be found. Hopefully the children are safe!
