Interstellar Union of Sapients
The colossus in control of mankind
The Interstellar Union of Sapients is the dominant sovereign entity of known space. By definition a business consortium with some political elements, it was formed during the first year of extrasolar colonization--the opening of the wormhole lanes and discovery of Balthazar--from the administrative remnants of the United Nations, which assimilated into the Transterrestrial Free Conglomerate in order to create the IUS.
Structure
The Union is governed by five administrators from five families, who in turn control majority shares of the five major corporations which used to comprise the Conglomerate. This 5-figurehead system is referred to as the Pentarchy. The Pentarchy is presided over by the most senior (by number of years served) member of the administration, referred to as the Pentarch-President.
The Pentarchy relegates most matters of state security and lawmaking to its child body known as the Solar Administrative Front, which maintains the standing military of the IUS and passes laws and regulations to keep the order across many systems and civilizations. While it is the official legislative body of the IUS, the Front writes and enforces laws at the order and approval of the Pentarchy alone. They are effectively a redundant mouthpiece for the Pentarchy, with the force necessary to back it up.
Star systems which fall under IUS jurisdiction are called Union Systems. Systems that aren’t controlled by the IUS (either by independent formation, or by outright rebellion) are called Frontier Systems. The IUS’ seat of organizational power is on the extrasolar planet Balthazar, but the Sol System is still viewed as the “home” of the Union, and all star maps plot 0 Sol as the “core” of Union space.
Public Agenda
To the common people, the Union's mission is to maintain the order and economic prosperity of the civilizations beneath its rule, and to facilitate the continuous expansion of mankind across known space. The IUS protects its citizens from violent subversives who threaten its control and the status quo that it enforces.
Assets
The Union possess all of the cumulative labor and human capital encompassed by 14 planets across 7 different star systems, in addition to the wealth amassed from all of the businesses and corporations which serve under the Pentarchy. Compared to the few independent sovereign bodies that exist, the Union is an economic and military colossus, boasting the most advanced and well-outfitted armed forces in known space.
History
- October 2048 CE - The wars of scarcity conclude with the usurpation of many national governments by subsidiaries of the Transterrestrial Free Conglomerate; the TFC takes control of research and development consortiums and manufacturing centers around the globe with the goal of extraterrestrial migration; Metabase Pioneering begins collecting data on thousands of nearby star systems
- March 2049 CE - Colonization of Mars begins; probes are sent to other star systems that have been observed to potentially have habitable worlds
- April 2066 CE - Metabase Pioneering deploys the first prototype wormhole generator for near-instantaneous interstellar travel, and sends it on a journey to 7458 Remus
- 2 February 2078 CE - The wormhole lane to 7458 Remus is completed; the first manned mission to the Remus System leads to the discovery of the planet which will be named Balthazar
- July 2079 CE - The administrative remnants of the former United Nations merge with the Transterrestrial Free Conglomerate, founding the Interstellar Union of Sapients; early mass colonization of Balthazar begins
- 22 October 2079 CE - Wormhole generators are launched to 3857 Morrigan, 9206 Prisca, 1156 Nephele, 291 Faustus, and 572 Corona
- 21 March 2084 CE - Construction of the Protectorate-Capital of Balthazar is completed
