They are in a manner of speaking, dragon babies. But they stay in this phase longer then most mortals live and have there for often been mistaken for a wholly different species.
Behavior
The youngest basilisks are fully dependent on their mother. They can neither hunt nor burn their meat, which is a most for all dragons. Those this youngest dragon young stay in their mothers cavern, close to her. In time they learn how to hunt and later how to breath fire. Once they have mastered both their mother stops caring for them. It is even known that some dragon females eat some of their young after they have grown more capable. The mothers reasoning being that if her young grow to strong they could come to challenge her over the ownership of her cavern and her treasures. There for older basilisks hide whit in smaller caverns close to their mothers cavern. At this time of their development they hunt for themselves and they do this mostly at night. This is the time when most of this young dragons die. For not only do basilisks get eaten by their own mothers at times, but they also eat one another and are hunter for their blood and meat by mortals. Therefore most basilisks are very cautious and tends to move fast be it when they strike to kill or flee. Or which is often the case when hunted by mortals, both.Basic Information
Anatomy
Basilisks are giant snakes whit a leathery skin not seen on lesser snakes. Their heads are triangular in shape and their fangs are the length of large daggers.

Older basilisks have learned how to breath fire and can there by feed themselves. Once they learn this there mother pays little attention to her young.

Growth Rate & Stages
It takes a basilisk four hundred years to go from a hatchling to a Wyrm. During this time it will grow from the size of a fully grow snake into a serpent the size of a tall three. It sheds its skin over a thousand times.

Basilisks loves the dark. There for they more often then not stay in the caverns chosen by their mother most of their early life cycle. Only leaving shortly before entering in to their next phase of growth, or at night to hunt.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Carnivores. All dragons, no matter the phase their in, eat only meat that has been burned. Those the power to breath fire is the first magic young dragons learn.

Most older basilisks need to take care of themselves, but as their nearly blind in day light they tend to hunt at night.

Like all dragons their blood can be used to create Dragon Blood Elixir. Their meat is also seen as the most expensive and exotic of delicacy's. Basilisk skin is also used by leather worker to create all manner of leather items.
Facial characteristics
Basilisks have very big eyes that glow whit a red fire. Some of the scales on the top of their heads are also sharper then most of their scales and will one day turn in to horns.
