Araqar
The island nation of Araqar is one of the strangest and most isolationist nations in Útgarðar. The island is located to the West of Útgarðar in the North Sea. It is surrounded by a constantly churning sea of icy water and winds. This storm was created as a defensive measure by the inhabitants of the island. The land itself is predominantly planes and forests with mountains in the North West of the island.
The most striking feature of the island is that the entire land is in a perpetual spring. This is due to the power of the Emerald Sun. The Emerald Sun is a large green crystal that emits a powerful magic light that permeates the island. This power is used to create the great storms around Araqar and preserve the island in spring. The Emerald Sun's origin is unknown and was found already lodged in the side of a mountain when the island was colonized.
The nation is ruled over by the Council of Nine. A council that is made up of the head of the various groups on the island. The most powerful member is the High Preserver, an elected position chosen by the eight other members of the council from a figure not associated with any of the groups to retain impartiality. The current High Preserver is Araynore Lannin. It is her job to manage the internal nature of the island and foreign relations with the rest of Útgarðar.
The population of Araqar is predominantly high elves, specifically the local variant of island elves. Due to the proximity of the Emerald Sun their biology has been altered slightly by its power. Their skin tone, instead of being the normal pale color of high elves, has gained a tanner complexion with a few rare members having green skin. Those members are almost always wild magic sorcerers and considered dangerous, but valuable, pariahs.
They are often distrustful of other races and often look down on them as uncivilized. They also are perceive to be snooty and high strung with an overinflated ego about themselves. This is not the majority though. Most Araqar simply think that they are not as violent and savage than the other races but are fine with trading or even working with outsiders. In fact the primary reason for elves leaving the island is to see the rest of Útgarðar.
