Experimental Energy Extraction Plant (EEEP)
The Experimental Energy Extraction Plant or 'EEEP' for short, is a private endeavor undertaken by the governing council of Forge Hearth. Taking advantage of its proximity to the lava lake they repurposed the abandoned temple of a now defunct religion that had been left to rot, and the master craft-persons who call the capital home, they've quietly built themselves the world's first geothermal electric plant. The plant powers lights throughout the subterranean city with new innovations that can utilize the energy being developed all the time.
Despite assorted attempts by the empire to get their hands on the technology Forge Hearth has kept it a complete secret, citing the risks of scaling up experimental technology and the unique situation of UMLOT's natural resources. For now the empire has respected their sovereignty on the matter but there is definitely a desire within the council of stewards to exert control of the technology whatever it may be.
Purpose / Function
Prior to becoming, in theory, the cradle of the industrial revolution that would surely follow 'EEEP' was known as The Temple of The Impassioned Heart. One of the main pilgrimage sites for worshipers of the Divine Six, the temple saw many devout visitors to its hallowed chambers.
In the modern times EEEP serves as a method of generating power for all of UMLOT proper, to prevent efforts to reverse engineer anything about the technology the power grid has not been extended up to the embassies on the surface in Upper UMLOT.
Alterations
A large number of alterations were made in the creation of EEEP but they were all very precise. Murals, statues, etc were left alone as much as was realistic for the project, but holes bored through walls, door retrofits for security, as well as all the large scale equipment that had to be installed has definitely left its mark on the structure.
Turbines, steam pipes, vapor condenser, a system to circulate the water out into the lava to generate the steam, and conduit for the large gauge cables that distribute the energy throughout the city.
Architecture
The building is divided into 4 main chambers, at present two are safe temperature areas one for the on premise security details, and one for the equipment construction and refurbishment area where the technicians perform preventative maintenance and prepare for work in the high temperature areas.
On the other side of an 'airlock' style security door are the two high temperature chambers, one is the turbine and condenser room, the other is where lava flow has been redirected to allow the water to cycle through and turn to steam efficiently.
Where the needs of the system hasn't superseded it, the preexisting architecture was left alone mostly to save on construction costs. What makes the structure somewhat unique even by temple standards is how it connected out to a massive network of tunnels weaving throughout what would become modern UMLOT. That was partly why no one else took control when the original religion went defunct. None of the other faiths were trusted with that kind of unrestricted access to the city's infrastructure.
History
A temple devoted to the Divine Six, in particular Swansdown and Dipvig, was one of the five sites worshipers on Reedan would pilgrimage to as an act of devotion to their gods. One of the 'tests of devotion' pilgrims would undertake was proximity to the lava without protection, enduring the heat for either time or closeness as an expression of their likewise impassioned hearts.
Tourism
The facility is extremely tight security: Classified, Top Secret, Eyes Only, Do Not Distribute, etc, etc. So there are guards, locks, protective spells, you name it... tourism is definitely not a thing under any normal operating circumstances.
