The Grand Reaper

The Grand Reaper, God of Death Anubis (a.k.a. The Jackal)

Brief Overview

Anubis is the god of Death and Burial Rites. He normally remained in the Underworld with Hades and his kin, however, he transverses all realms in order to retain balance within his domain.

General Overview

Also known as the Grand Reaper, Anubis watches over the domain of death, however, he also pays close attention to the religions of the creatures he's guiding into the afterlife in order to offer them their proper burial rites so they may transition smoothly into the next life. He's been referred to as the Jackal, but he possesses a humanoid body type. Most say this is because he wishes to keep those he approaches comfortable. Anubis is a highly controversial god due to his morals and general outlook. Many mortals believe that he is an amoral god, and others believe him to be moral, however, when asked himself he states that morality is defined most often by those passing judgment...

Artifacts

Deaths Pardon (Divine artifact)
A letter of pardon written by Anubis himself. When presented to any reaper, this letter will prevent them from taking the holder into the afterlife. The letter will turn to ash upon use, and the user will awaken moments later with 10 HP. This is a very rare item as Anubis doesn't normally allow mortal beings another shot at life.

Anubis Scale (Divine artifact)
The staff of Anubis himself. It has a glossy black shaft and the skull of a fallen god fitted into its top. Extending from the sockets of the skull is a vertical bar made of gold which two pedestals hanging by golden chains sway from. To even wield this staff the person who touches it must have a Spiritual power modifier of 28 or higher or their soul will be consumed by the staff. Upon successful retrieval the wielder can passively see all reapers, and may chose 5 spells from anywhere within the Necromancy spell list which they can cast at will, as long as it is on their turn. In addition, the Spiritual power and Spiritual save modifiers of the wielder will also gain a +5 bonus.

Necklace of Anubis (Divine artifact)
A necklace made from ancient fangs which hang from faded leather strips weaved intricately together. While wearing this necklace the wearers soul is no longer able to be removed for any reason, not even death. This allows the user to continue functioning after passing, though their body will still be dead and they will begin to rot (they will become Undying).

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Anubis is one of the few Undying creatures that hasn't lost his conscious mind. He cannot die, and he has no soul, however, he envies those who do. He sees a soul not as power like most gods, but as an exsisting energy that makes a person who they are. He knows who and what he is, but that doesn't mean once in awhile he doesn't wish that the empty void within him could be filled.

Physical quirks

His Ears

Anubis has the ears of a Jackal with one exception, his left ear is missing it's tip. This is because he battled and slayed a legion of Hollows which was rising from the Abyss seeking the souls of all those living within. In addition, with these ears he can hear both the cries of the living and the pleading of the dead. Corpses and souls alike.

His Eyes

One eye is black, and one is white. With the black eye he can see the souls of the dead, and the souls still within the living, but with his white eye he can see the lifespan and potential of those who still possess a waking breath.

His Fangs

So rarely will Anubis bear his fangs, but when he does... All involved should be concerned. Anubis possesses saliva with properties capable of causing necrosis, and fairly quickly at that. Anyone bit by Anubis either died, or had to cut off the limb he had bitten to escape the wrath of Death himself.

His Fingers

He has oddly black fingers all the way down to his third knuckles and from his fingertips curl dangerous claws. Most would assume that this is for harming those who oppose him, but he actually uses them to dig graves for those who had no one left to mourn them.

Special abilities

Guide to the afterlife
As the god of the dead, Anubis is the Grand reaper and the one who ushers the souls of all living creatures to their afterlife without any bias. When a creature breathes its final breath, he will arrive as their guide and take them to their trials. These trials are usually dependent on the alignment of the creature (and sometimes god), however, they will vary from person to person. Negative - Abyss, Field of shadows - or Hell (choose the layer of the sin they represent).
Positive - Heaven, Mercury fountains - or Elysium, Field of dreams.
Neutral - Underworld, Purgatory.
Magical - Fayde, Omas playground.
His goal is to coax them to choose death, but there is one survivable path through each trial. Each creature can only undergo their trials once, meaning if they fail the creature dies, however, if they succeed in their death trial they will be sent back to the Mortal plane (Eden) and be granted 1 final chance to find peace in life before their death.

True Jackals call
Anubis can summon his brethren afflicted with the darker side of Lycanthropy by performing the Jackals Call. As he howls It suddenly appears as if it were nighttime and he summons a massive mist that appears to be inescapable with a clear eye in the center ranging about 245 sq ft with him as its focal point. As the Lykoi respond to the Jackals call, they howl an otherworldly cry and all enemies within that 245 sq ft range are prompted to make a stand, using their will to fight the howls. For all who fail this test or willpower, a Lykoi will emerge from the mist and attack the them relentlessly in an attempt to drag them off into Purgatory’s mist.
If a target creature is bitten by the Lykoi, its jaw will then clamp and it will begin moving backwards towards the surrounding mist moving at a staggered speed due to the extra weight. The target creature may attempt to escape the Lykoi’s clamped jaws by struggling with all their might against the Lykoi. If the creature struggles hard enough the Lykoi will release its grip, but on its next available opportunity it will attack again, and attempting to drag them away.
The Lykoi summoned will always stay fixated on its original target, the only exception being if its target dies or somehow leaves the range of the Grand reapers aura radius. If this should happen, the summoned Lykoi will then attack another creature, choosing the first creature within its line of sight that moves as its next target. This ability lasts for only 5 minutes, however, to those within the mist it feels like endless torment. No matter what they are doing, when the duration ends the Lykoi will drop what they’re holding and run back into the mist as it dissipates.
If any creatures are dragged into the mist they will remain in Purgatory, even after the duration ends, and they will be forced to either kill or be killed by the Lykoi fixated on them. Each creature dragged to Purgatory will emerge separate from the others, and if they survive the Lykoi they will have to find their own way back to the Mortal Realm. If any of the surviving creatures was successfully bitten by a Lykoi they must endure the curse of Lycanthropy.

Cold as Death
The entire area of Anubis aura radius is considered extremely cold, not to mention the eerie feeling living creatures get when in his presence generally causes great discomfort. Undead creatures in his auras radius must exert their will power or they will fall into a fit of fearful terror. In addition, when Anubis reaches half HP his aura suddenly becomes that of death itself, causing everything in his range to rot. Anyone/anything in his range which decays is transferred into energy that is siphoned back into Anubis health.

Improper burial
When Anubis finds a person who kills without respect it enrages him. Because he is part of the Deorum pantheon he won't just smite a mortal, however, he will give them a curse called "One foot in the grave." This curse will resurface every day as the creature wakes and if the creature succumbs they will becomes vulnerable to diseases and poisons, and can no longer reap the benefits of sleeping. In addition, if the targeted creature is overtaken by the curse they will susceptible to a "Festering wound." This wound can only happen while in combat, however, each time the afflicted target gets stabbed or slashed they must treat it immediately or the necrosis process will begin within their wound. Their new wound will fester and cause their physical health and speed to diminish. This effect will remain until the wound is dressed and properly treated with something containing antibiotics. The curse of "One foot in the grave" can only be removed by finding the corpse the target wronged and giving it a burial related to its religion (or at the very least burying the damn thing), or a concoction made with ambrosia.

Death glare
Any enemy whose health is fading within the aura radius of Anubis must succeed a test of mental power if Anubis glares at them. if the target cannot keep him from entering their mind it will rot their brain, causing them to die. This can only be done once a day to each individual target, however, Anubis does not like to use this ability unless need be.

Jaws of death
Anubis bites down into his enemy with his sharp fangs. His saliva is similar to that of a corpse so not only does it cause necrotic tissue while wounding his enemy, but it also poisons their bloodstream.

When the bell tolls
A small silver bell attached to his tail will ring, but only when he wills it so. It is rumored that when Anubis returns and rings this bell, he will summon the power of all existing reapers and take 1 ability from each while taking absolute control of them. If this happens, anyone within his auras radius will fear him and each reaper they can see...

Personal history

The Two Hounds

Since the first death in existence, Anubis has been around. Once the first creature died, Anubis manifested as the god to a domain that was in need of an overseer. Not long after the first creatures began to rise, so did Khomb, god of the hunt. Initially, these two gods did not see eye to eye due to the fact that Anubis does not believe in senseless death, however, Khoum only favored the hunt. For many years they clashed in opposition before Anubis allowed Khoum to go unchecked, causing the death of the first race of creatures who evolved on Eden. A race of large reptilian creatures who roamed the planet. Once all of them had died, Khoum was lost. He realized what happens when death grows in abundance without a balance and apologized to Anubis, claiming that he had learned his lesson.
Once he was convinced that Khoum had learned his lesson, Anubis asked Geodea to start a new era of creatures. however, she informed him that she could only create species that were female, not male. Anubis traded Geodea one letter of Deaths pardon to gift to her favorite creature in order to convince her to that she should create them anyways, and so she did. For several days Geodea cried, and what rained down in her tears were the first stages of Edens next era of creatures. Once she had finished, Anubis returned to Khoum and told him of their dilemma, and Khoum decided to take it into his own hands. He waited until the creatures had grown into full fledged adults and then took the form of each different species as a male and procreated in order to make sure their species could live on, avoiding extinction.
Anubis and Khoum met afterwards and decided that they now saw eye to eye, as though Khoum would still hunt, he would do so responsibly. He had earned the title of not only god of hunt, but also the god of beasts. Now that both Anubis and Khoum saw eye to eye, the Jackal of Death and the Hound of the Hunt began to act as brothers. Now, when one hound howls the other will always respond, coming to aid in the others endeavours.

The Trials

Once day a young mortal boy passed on due to an infectious disease. It ravaged his body, but not his mind and soul. When Anubis arrived to lead him to the sea of souls, the boy appealed to his sense of mercy. The boy asked for one more chance, but not for free. He told Anubis that all mortals should be given a test to prove that they were worthy of their second chance and if not, that they were ready to pass on, so Anubis created for him a trial. This trial had three stages, and two different paths which appealed to the subconscious mind of the mortal involved. The boy took his time and eventually found his way through to proper path. Anubis was astounded by this revelation. He made the trial difficult intentionally as in his beliefs, no one should get a second chance, however, he was so moved by the boys achievement that he decided to revoke that belief. Since then, Anubis has offered every living creature a second chance in the form of what he calls their "Death Trial."

The Sealing

All gods were called to a commerce to decide the fate of a young mortal who passed through the Omnigate and entered Taegate, the realm of gods. Now, in most cases mortals don't fair well in the realm of the gods, but this young woman stood against its effects regardless, using only her will to press forward. She stood among the gods and belittled them for their lack of aid during a breakout of the caustic plague. She told them that they had failed the mortals as in only 12 days she had dealt with the problem herself. The gods began to whisper and shout amongst one another in appal. How dare this mortal speak so harshly about them when they covered all domains, not only the simple plagues to strike humanity. Before they had a chance to retort, the young girl pulled a box from her bag and opened it before them. Many of them recognized the box as she revealed it. It was a Dwarven artifact built to trap evils called "the Box of Blasphemy."
As the box opened a powerful vortex pulled all in its reach into the box, including several gods and goddesses. Anubis was unfortunately among them. The young girl was cursed by Geodea for her blasphemous acts, however, she was able to escape the realm of gods and later had the box titled in her name. It forever became known as "Pandoras box."

The dangerous circumstances that surged throughout Eden after this event caused many ripples while leaving several domains unchecked. The most important of which was Death domain. Once Anubis had been sealed within Pandoras box, most beings stopped dying. No matter how bad the disease, or how grievous the wound, the mortals simply wouldn't die. This caused each god to create what are now known as Reapers in order to gain souls for themselves, help the souls to recycle, or simply even out the tally of living and dead. Many Reapers were created, however, no matter their power, no god could create a Reaper strong enough to cull the inhabitants of Adele as this was the location of Anubis temple of Quietus. The goddess of creation Geodea, as well as the goddess Myamya, decided that since this issue could not be corrected they would do their best to restore balance in another way. They declared that no mortal trapped on Adele could create life until the day death was brought back to the island. To this day, the people of Adele still walk its lands, unable to give birth, but also unable to pass into their next life.
Rumor has it that once Anubis returns he will fix what has been broken, killing all those who should have died all those centuries ago just as the Grand reaper should to correct the balance.
