Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a holiday observed in many Americanist societies throughout Starweb space. Usually centering around a meal with family, it is a time of reunion and joy.
According to American legend, Thanksgiving traces its origins back to preindustrial Terra, when settlers from Yurop were crossing over into North Merika. Many of these people struggled to establish themselves in their new homes and sometimes wound up relying on the native inhabitants for aid. In mythology, Thanksgiving supposedly descends from such a situation where a group of North Merikan indigenous people shared a meal with a group of settlers. (Perhaps an unwise move in the long term, many indigenous people died from diseases brought by the settlers, and later on the Ancient America government perpetrated massacres against them and marginalized many onto reservations).
The modern Thanksgiving still retains many similarities with how it was practiced in Ancient American times. Thanksgiving Day itself is considered a holiday which many people have off of work, and the festivities tend to center around a large dinner. This meal is extensive, often requiring most of the day (if not more) to prepare. Its centerpiece is usually a cooked turkey, as it has been historically, with various other dishes. In many cases, extended families will select one location for the Thanksgiving dinner and gather everyone there. Sometimes this occurs at the biggest house in the family, in which case an impromptu extended table often must be assembled from smaller tables in order to have enough room to accommodate all the guests. Other families opt to hold their Thanksgiving day dinners at venues of various sorts. Out-of-town guests are common as well, in some cases traveling impressive distances. Some families elect to hold their Thanksgivings at the same location multiple years, siuh as the house of an elder member or members who do not travel much. Prayer, in accordance with the particular practices and customs of various denominations of Christianity, is common as well.
