Founded by a group of disgruntled Osiryx Federation employees, Osyr Medical Aid is a galaxy wide organisation that provides healthcare and medicine to everyone, regardless of their species or the capabilities (or lack thereof) with space travel. The organisation is led by doctors, surgeons and nurses, and is focused on providing the best healthcare that they possibly can.

The aid they provide to others is typically free. However, they also lend their services to other organisations or corporations, such as the Osiryx Federation and Terra Novus. These organisations will pay them a commission fee for their continued services. The terms of this commission differs between organisations, but it does mean that Osyr Medical Aid has become so integral to the space faring way of life in Osiron that without them, galactic operations from organisations like the OF and Terra Novus would fail completely.

Responded to an emergency call in Vallon X. Looks like a turf war between pirates or mercenaries. Three OMA registered ships are on the scene, but this looks like a big one. At least six unidentified ships and a lot of debris. Requesting further aid and a quick dock at OMA Facility 5.

Why ‘Osyr’?

The founders - those initial disgruntled employees from the OF, all registered doctors or surgeons - didn’t want to feel tied down to a single area in the galaxy. They chose to name the organisation after the central blackhole in Osiron so that everyone knew that, no matter where they were, Osyr Medical Aid would always be there to help.

Keeping with the idea of not being tied down, Osyr Medical Aid put in a request with the Osiryx Federation for the development of several medical stations. These medical stations (referred to now as OMA Facilities) can each hold up to 70 medium sized spaceships and are equipped with state of the art medical technology. A couple of the earlier models also have dedicated research facilities on board which are used to develop new drugs and vaccines.

Their original request was for two OMA Facilities which the Osiryx Federation agreed to with little resistance. As Osyr Medical Aid grew, they began to commission more OMA Facilities so that they could cover more ground, alongside commissioning transport ships that could carry a crew of 15 for any situations where urgent medical aid was required. Now, there are 21 OMA Facilities throughout Osiron, with two more currently in development.

“Ah, we’ve got an emergency call incoming. Four alarms. Gremoris System.”

“Any responders yet?”

“Just two so far. Think they’re the ones who called it in.”

“Right. Setting a course for Gremoris now. Let ‘em know they’ve got backup on route.”

Responding to Emergencies

Osyr Medical Aid ranks emergency calls on a scale of one to six. They refer to the scale as ‘alarms’, with one alarm being a minor emergency and six alarms being an ‘all hands on deck’ emergency situation.

Usually, an emergency call will start out as one alarm. As first responders from OMA arrive on scene, they may up the alarm as they see fit, or as the situation worsens. There are occasions, of course, where the emergency call will start out at a higher alert level. This will only happen if an OMA employee makes the emergency call and decides that the situation requires a higher level of response. All calls that come through from non-OMA personnel are put through as one alarm. On the opposite end of the scale, as the situation eases up, the alarm level will be decreased.

Six alarm emergency responses are extremely rare. An emergency response that makes it to six alarms requires every OMA team in the region to respond and even initiates Protocol Alpha. This protocol involves flying the closest OMA Facility (which usually remains relatively static) as near to the affected area as possible so that immediate treatment can be provided on a large scale.

Underneath Osyr Medical Aid’s healthcare and emergency responses lies a secret. OMA was founded on the principle of helping everyone, regardless of who they were, where they came from, or whether or not they could fly a spaceship. Overtime, they found that people didn’t just need medical attention or healthcare benefits. Some people needed help to get out of terrible situations.

With the Osiryx Federation and the various organisations that followed, came strict rules about moving throughout the galaxy. It made it extremely difficult for some individuals, trapped in abusive or deadly environments, to escape to a better life. Osyr Medical Aid found themselves in a unique position to help out these individuals.

No one would notice if a patient went missing or if they were marked down as dead on arrival to an OMA Facility. It wasn’t difficult for organisations, like the OF, to prove that something not entirely legal was occurring, but to do so would lose them all access to Osyr Medical Aid.

Cool stuff, I like that you did a medical group for this prompt.   I was a bit confused about the origins and original funding for the group. The Osyr Medical Aid was "founded by a group of disgruntled Osiryx Federation employees". Yet, they were funded by that same federation ("OMA Facilities which the Osiryx Federation agreed to with little resistance"). Am I missing something?

Ah yeah, that might just be me needing to flesh the article out a little more!   'Founded' in this case is a bit of a loose term. They started out small with maybe a handfull of ships and the bare minimum of medical equipment because they didn't want to be tied down by a tonne of rules, they just wanted to help out where they could. As they grew a bit bigger, they realised that they actually needed somewhere for patients to stay (if they had major injuries and/or needed to recover) and the ships they had just weren't covering their needs anymore.   So essentially they went back to the Osiryx Federation and basically said "we want to keep helping out, but we need a space station or two, could you build them?" - because these guys were all doctors/surgeons/nurses etc. and didn't know how to craft ships capable of space travel. The OF agreed because they knew a lot of these people were the best medical professionals the galaxy had to offer and at the time most of their OF agents would actually be treated by these guys whilst out in the field. In my head, the OF bargained for special privileges early on (priority treatment etc.) rather than get OMA to pay a commission fee for the OMA Facilities.   The OF didn't really fund much else. OMA bought their own medical supplies and would pay independent engineers to do repairs on their ships.   I really need to get that written down properly though ^^' hopefully before SC is over!

That makes a lot more sense, thanks! I hope you get the time to include it in the article :)
