Chapter IX: No Rest for the Wizkids
General Summary
Standing above the smoldering remains of Thalgron, they scramble to find some way to assist their Dwarven friend.
But what takes up the majority of the core is a glass or crystalline container shaped much like an almond. The end points are capped with metal and nestled securely in place, keeping it from rattling around. It is the source of the glow - and the necromantic magic. And, upon closer inspection, it’s easy to see why: within is suspended the skeletal remains of a small creature, like an insect in amber. Humanoid, but tiny, and glowing with the binding magic of the vessel it is in. It still wears the clothing it had in life, and the faintest, dusty images remain from its back of delicate, translucent wings.
Upon further inspection of the lair, they are able to not only find a Scroll of Resurrection but also cast the divine spell thanks to Xini's mysterious benefactor. Thalgron is returned to life and the students finally return to the College. During dinner, Abir apologizes for his brash behavior. The others notice the damage caused to Lunny and Thalgron offers to help upgrade their carapace. During the exchange, Thalgron confides in Lunny not only about the voice he heard from beyond but also about a species known as the Modron assembling on Mechanus.
That night, Viska received a strange calling card of some sort that has got her on the extreme edge, consuming copious amounts of caffeine seemingly to stay awake. Xini, meanwhile, is visited by a seemingly divine being and agrees to her assistance before awakening once more in bed.
The students collect for breakfast and everyone is seemingly finished eating when Lunny opens their dish to find what at first looks to be a berry, but soon is revealed to be the beating heart of a sprite. They find a hidden compartment and share the sight of a skeletal fae suspended in a crystalline container. After trying to speak with the undead thanks to Elyujah, all they get for a response from the being is "HELP ME", "LET ME OUT", and "LIFE" as its last wish. Shortly thereafter, our automata friend powers down and collapses.
