Hargus Hurryhouse

Hargus Hurryhouse

Looking forward is what matters. I already know where I've been. And I don't want to be there.   - Hargus Hurryhouse

Hargus Hurryhouse is surrounded by legend and myth, and with good reason. Luckily for most, he is a genuinely good-hearted individual who looks for how he can help others.

Hargus - The Early Years

Hargus is not his real name. Never was. He made it up to sound more regal.   Hargus was born of average parents in a small village in the Kingdom of Orsholon. The real names of his parents are known only to Hargus, and he isn't sharing. His family abandoned him, giving him a few gold pieces and a bag with some rations. They escorted him to Orsholon, and left him there in the streets.   Hargus was a classic urchin, learning how to keep a low profile, how to make his way in the city. He also learned how to adapt his behavior to fit in, whether in the markets or the back alleys. He made many connections in the seedier parts of town, giving him access to the less than legal aspects and individuals in the capital city. He took the name Hargus Hurryhouse because he felt it had an aura of nobility.   He made friends with the less savory characters in the shadows of Orsholon City. He learned how to get around the city using the sewers and the back alleys. He learned the patterns of the City Guard, and how to avoid them.   Nevertheless, Hargus was not interested in the criminal aspect. Instead, he was interested in how he could help the poor, the shunned, and the downtrodden. He was one of them.

But most importantly, he learned how many in Orsholon lived. While the Kingdom of Orsholon was far and above one of the most - if not the most benevolent nations of Arnathia, the poor still existed. There were still those who scratched and clawed just to feed their families and find ways to pay for clothing and shoes.   Hargus knew their pain. He knew what is like to struggle, to barely make it. Feast or famine, but rarely secure.   But one thing he did not have that others did was family. His abandoned him. Left him to fend for himself on the cold streets of Orsholon City, his family become those who also lived in the streets. What many considered dregs, he considered friends. And yes, family. As a young boy of 9 or 10 years old, he wanted to feel a part of something. To belong. As he grew older, he wanted to do whatever he could to make others feel part of something as well.

Hargus's Recent History

HargusYoung 3.jpeg
As Hargus grew older and more mature, he learned a number of skills, and began his career as an adventurer. Tales of his exploits are both legendary and feared. Perhaps the most told is of a battle in which Hargus faced more than 100 orc warriors.   The orcs has surrounded Hargus, trapping him in a box canyon. Just as they were about to attack, Hargus smiled. As Hargus took his aim at the orcs to blast them with cold, a shadow swept quickly across the orc horde. From the sky dropped an immense silver dragon. Hargus and the dragon seemed to work in unison, like a choreographed dance, set to a music no one could hear.   Hargus and the dragon dispatched the oncoming orcs with amazing speed. And as the last began to run away, he simply laughed.   No one seems to know where the dragon came from, or if it even really existed. In truth, many simply put it off to a tall tale. Hargus will neither confirm nor deny any of the tales. His typical answer when asked is "Is that what they say?", and follow it with a hearty laugh.   Another subject of speculation is the 3 years when Hargus disappeared. During that period, he simply vanished. But when he returned, it was with a confidence and strength that was unmatched. No one knows where he went, and as usual, Hargus isn't telling.
Hargus and The Fire.png
As a rule, Hargus is spoken of in hushed tones. Those who have felt his kindness and sense of honor speak highly, and those who have crossed him fear speaking his name again. He has many, many friends.   And likely, as many enemies.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Tall, slender but not skinny, athletic looking build.

Body Features

Those who look carefully might spot a bit of what looks like silver scales on Hargus' chest. This began as simple dry patches on his skin as a child, but spread across his chest and abdomen as if it were a breastplate. The appearance scared the villagers in his hometown, and his parents abandoned him before they too were ostracized. He kept it hidden under shirts in his younger years, but not it serves as another part of the mystique that his name carries.

Facial Features

Full head and beard of dark brown hair. Dark brown eyes and a wide smile when laughing (which is often).

Apparel & Accessories

Normally dressed as a nobleman, with a long coat over a vest and partially open shirt and comfortable trousers. Fine leather boots and a ring with an insignia on the top with his initials and on the sides, images of a dragon. The dragon eyes on the sides are red gems.

Mental characteristics

Education

Hargus' education was on the streets of Orsholon City. He was bright, quick to learn, and had a charismatic charm that allowed him mto make more friends than enemies. He would hang around the crafting quarter in the northwest part of the city, learning skills from the master craftsmen. He would go to the food halls and establishments near the academies on the west side of the city and listen to the students and professors. He watched the guardsmen and cadets practicing their skills on the proving grounds in the southwest part of the city. He watched. He took notes. And he practiced.   His ability to assimilate information and put it to use would come in handy.

Employment

Hargus has never held a steady job. He had been known to work occasional side jobs, such as delivering packages, passing on important messages, or even loading carts. Hargus is not averse to work. But he is fond of change and adventure. Ths causes him to prefer to work at short-term assignments that give him the freedom to do as he wishes.

Mental Trauma

The name Hargus Hurryouse is a name he gave himself to detach from the family that abandoned him. He does not speak of them, does not use his birth name, never speaks of his past before he arrived in Orsholon City. This pain is something he works to alleviate by helping others.

Morality & Philosophy

Hargus feels very strongly that he must do what benefits the most people and helps the disadvantaged, even if that means bending ir breaking the rules. However, he also knows that working within the system is often the path to lasting change, so he works not to alienate those in power. As such, he has developed relationships with individuals from the underworld as well as those fromthe Royal Guard and Palace.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Hargus' youth was a difficult one. Learning to survive on cold city streets at a young age could have hardened him, made him as cold-hearted aas those streets. But that was not Hargus.   Hargus had been different from birth. The scales on his chest that grew more prominent over time garnered derision and fear from his peers and their parents. So much so that his parents chose to abandon him rather than defend him. He knew what it felt like to be treated as an outsider, as unwanted. He wanted to minimize that for anyone he could.   In these earlier years of his life, Hargus made the decision that he would work to put himself in a position that could effect change. He saw that as needing wealth, but also standing in the community. He would need to be trusted, but not seeing as someone of nobility. He wanted people, especially the disadvantaged, to see him as approachable, as a friend or advocate.   By the time he reached twenty years of age, Hargus had built up enough wealth to take care of himself and still help others. And he had enoug connections to get things done.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Having spent his youth on the streets of Orsholon, he had an acute ability to judge individuals by their actions.

Likes & Dislikes

Hargus is fond of a good strong ale, and is a devout carnivore. He is also partial to fine clothing, but not ostentatiously so. He is normally impeccably dressed. He also is very fond of giving gifts and has a knack for giving people just the right item when they need it.   Hargus does not tolerate dishonesty, and will find ways to punish those who lie to him. While he is not against wealth (he himself is wealthy), he expects those with means to contribute and has no patience for the greedy and self-serving.   Hargus has a particular dislike for those who take advantage of others, whether it is a thief or an authority. More than once, Hargus has overheard a story of someone cheating another, only to find the cheater has disappeared or suffered some catastrophesoon after. And yet, Hargus is never connected to events.

Virtues & Personality perks

Hargus is very generous and kind, unless you cross him.

Social

Family Ties

His parents abandoned him as a youth. Their whereabouts are unknown. He has no other known family.

History

Hargus was passing through Tremer and stopped in at the Dragon's Stein Tavern Tavern for a bite to eat and a pint of ale. He struck up a conversation with Royston Ranald and in a short time discovered that Ranald was being threatened by some thugs over a loan he owed in payment for the Tavern. Royston had been on time with his payments, but the thugs were demanding more for "protection", as in "Nice tavern ya got here, be a shame if something happened to it..."   Hargus is not the type to tolerate this kind of intimidation, and told Royston not to worry any longer, that it would be taken care of. A few weeks passed and no sign if the thugs appeared. Eventually, a messenger came from Lawcrane with paperwork showing the loan had been paid in full, and the deed was now in Royston's name.   Nothing directly indicated that Hargus had any hand in this, but Royston remains convinced it was Hargus who ended the harassment. He has tried to thank Hargus, who denies having any involvement. Nevertheless, Royston welcomes Hargus with free victuals and drink whenever he is in town, and the Aerie Inn has a beautifully appointed room set aside for Hargus for whenever he passes through.

How He Became An Urchin

Hargus was born in a small village in the southwest of Orsholon to average parents. It is believed his mother died in childbirth, and he was raised by his father. There is speculation, however, that the man who raised him was not his biological father.   As Hargus grew into a young boy, patches of dry skin began forming on his chest and belly. They appeared at first to simply be some form of skin affliction. But as he continued to grow, they changed appearance. They began changing to a more scaly look, with a gray tint. This was, of course, considered unnatural. His father and his new wife never let Hargus show his chest in public, for fear of being ostracized. His stepmother had little worry for Hargus, but for her own reputation. She did not want to be associated with a "freak".   She always made him wear two shirts, one with a higher collar, even in the heat of the summer. Of course, this was odd to other children, and he was often picked on for his mode of dress. His stepmother was no help, calling him an abomination, and telling him he was lucky she tolerated him. His childhood was not easy.   One day, the usual needling from other children took a darker turn. One of the kids had been told by an adult that Hargus dressed the way he did to hide a secret. He didn't know the secret, and Hargus wasn't telling. A gang of kids decided they would find out for themselves.   They pushed him, poked at him, tried to take his clothes from him. Hargus fended them off the best he could, but they would not relent. They finally knocked him to the ground, tearing his shirts from his body, and when they saw his chest, reeled back. Hargus had developed what appeared to be a full breastplate of silvery scales on his chest and abdomen.   "He's a monster!" the attackers cried. And then one said "We KILL monsters" and lunged at Hargus. Instinctively, Hargus threw up his arm to shield himself from the attack. As he did, a massive rumbling, like that of thunderclap was heard and they attackers were hurled back a dozen feet. One boy hit his head on a rock, and began to bleed. The others, in fear, ran away. Hargus ran home to tell his parents what had happened.   No one was there. He sat on his bed, crying in fear and confusion. What had just happened? What had he done? The answer would come soon enough.   His stepmother came trough the front door, screaming "He's a freak! A KILLER! Get him out before he ruins us! What if he kills us in our sleep?". The boy who hit his head had died from his injuries.   Hargus' father was close behind, trying to get her to calm down, but he would not succeed. While Hargus sat crying and ashamed, she railed on and his father simply was beaten down. His parents decided it would be best for them and the village to "get rid" of Hargus. The plan was made all within earshot of Hargus. They would put together a small sack of gold coins (his stepmother fought against it), a bag with some clothes, and a few morsels of food.   They grabbed Hargus, shoved him into the back of a wagon, and made their was to Orsholon City. They told the gatekeeper they were there to deliver him to a craft guild for apprenticeship. Once inside the gate, they made their was to the industrial area, and told Hargus to get out. His stepmother's final words to him were: "Good luck you monster. May the streets swallow you up."   His father said nothing. He simply whipped the reins, turning the horses around, and led them to the gate in silence.   Hargus was alone.
