He is a dying god. 
Some believe he may have been the very first being, and that his ultimate goal is to be the last, though others argue that they are confusing Jergal with another entity. 
Jergal was once a revered god, the recorder of all names, the guarantee that each soul would be known. Still, he was not kind. He was not benevolent. He sought to hasten the end of all life, played patron to necromancers as the soulless undead were the finest servants to his cause. 
Since the ascension of The Raven Queen, Jergal's influence has been beaten back and now exists as a dying spark. What few followers he retains are all that keep him from fading away.

Tenets of Faith

The word of Jergal is that all things must die. He is to bear witness to the end of all things before joining the Nothing — his own name the last to add to his shelves.
