Niay's House Building / Landmark in [LN7] Sestia | World Anvil

Niay's House

Dye brings coin, that's true enough, but it also brings smells the likes of which make the tanneries roses. They moved in an' we suggested that they move out again. Took 'em a while to do it... not sure if that was before we offered gifts of fire sprites, or after we scattered dragonbane around the place and brought old Redtooth nearby for their daily walk...
— Yari-edis Sharpclaw, metal apprentice staying at Mama Dragon's Boarding House

Purpose / Function

Original Purpose

A dye factory located in the city, as opposed to the outskirts, so that less time was wasted on transportation.

New Purpose

Niay moved in to make the old dye factory an apartment where she can be independent and invent to her heart's delight.

Alterations

red dye vat added knotted rope: a workout vat, machines were bolted to the walls so that opponents pop out
orange dye vat covered, drilled tunnel to connect with red, yellow: showerhead was installed, water comes from rooftop collection,
yellow dye vat added pole, drilled tunnel to connect with red, orange: toilet is here, piss is collected and sold to tanneries, shit is collected and sold as fertilizer
green dye vat added ladder: mushrooms and other hardy plants grow down here for food and/or medicine
blue dye vat added ladder: threw down a nest of blankets and pillows to create a circular sleeping nest
indigo dye vat added ladder, pulley system: overflow of small items are stored here
purple dye vat added ladder, shelves, cushions, light: relaxing space with books
pink dye vat added ladder, pulley system: overflow of medium items are stored here
black dye vat added ladder, rectangular tub, drilled tunnel to connect with white: clothes washing is done here
white dye vat no ladder, multiple clotheslines on hooks: washed clothes are hung here and top-down fans are turned on
multicolor dye vat added ladder, pulley system: kitchen and where food is carefully cooked, mostly just eaten
In addition, all doors except for one have been welded shut, there are three secret exits/entrances from the roof,

Architecture

Most of the building is made in the magic resistant style of most factories in the city. Cinder blocks were used for the walls, light shines in from the rooftop with strategically placed glass (the fewest pieces for the most sunlight since money was pinched when first building the place).   Inside the main entrance is a cloakroom where employees placed their winter items (coats, hats, scarves, gloves, etc.) if they had them. Going past that is a narrow hallway that comes into a large, rectangular room with twelve circular vats set into the floors, four in the center circle (red, orange, yellow, and multicolor) and the remaining eight making up the outer circle.   The is a very small office behind the cloakroom, where important documents were filed and money was kept, but it was magically locked and never opened after the dye factory shut down. Niay knows that it's there, but she doesn't know how to break in. There is also another section that used to house toilets, but she's happy to keep to the main room and is making plans to block the area off completely.   While it was running there were no adornments on the walls; after Niay repurposed the place there are still few adornments on the main walls as the floor is taken up with one circular table to hold all of her inventions in progress (with a few areas used as storage for bigger items she doesn't wish to move into the vats).

History

The building was erected at the same time that other textile places were created nearby; the aim was to make a miniature tailors' row nearer the ports so that a) not as much coin was spent on transportation and b) sailors on leave would come and place orders. The total amount of buildings consisted of:
  1. A hollowed-out sycamore tree for seamstresses to live in - quick repairs and monograms
  2. A dye factory for ease of transportation to the port, possibly with a quick sale area for fabrics not up to quality
  3. A sail making factory with workers in the sail loft - selling new sails downstairs and repairing sails upstairs
  4. A hollowed-out oak tree for quilters - making blankets, using old fabrics, and wall hangings
  5. A hollowed-out pine tree for dressmakers (non-beings) - making shirts, trousers, etc. for humanoid people
  6. A hollowed-out pine tree for dressmakers (beings)- making shirts, trousers, etc. for people who have extra limbs, bones, or appendages to consider
  7. Several buildings for cloth merchants and button/ribbon merchants to hawk their wares
  8. A hollowed-out elm tree where old cloth, used cloth, and the like can be sold and purchased

I like the specifics of the changes and can see how you can make a lot more of this after SC

Thanks! I hadn't really thought of which vats were for what purpose until SC, so this was a great prompt for me :)

I really like the list of the alterations and how each dye vat was repurposed. Niay sounds like a fascinating character! :)

Niay is an awesome character and I can't wait to a) write about here in Lucky Number 7, and b) write her book when she goes off on her own adventure. <3 Thanks for commenting!
