Bandicoots' stew

A Jarjinjirla's usual meal after their first kill.

Cooking

This meal is meant to be cooked by whomever the person who just did their first kill asks to, except their family. A person's first kill is seen as one of the marks of a child growing up. As such, they are meant, from that point onward, to not rely on their own family so much, but to branch out.

Ingredients

The main ingredient is, of course, the person's first kill. This is usually a bandicoot for tradition, but in reality, any other animal or creature can be used for the dish.   The second most important ingredient is dried up Bandicoot silver. The Jarjinjirla store these mushrooms carefully, and besides danger of starvation, only use them for this one dish. The mushrooms come from the grippli zones, and as such, they don't get a lot of opportunities to gather or trade for more. A clan running out of dried Bandicoot silver is in fact one of the reasons for them to decide to seek a grippli clan.   Seasonal ingredients gathered by the whole clan, and spices that the family cooking the dish in question have saved up make up the rest of the meal.

A social event

Whether the first kill was as small as a sand skink, or as big as a purple worm, the meal cooked must be large enough for the whole clan, as everybody takes part in this meal.   During the eating of the meal, the person being celebrated is lovingly mocked, pointing out the mistakes or issues during their hunt of the animal, its skinning, and processing. In a sense, is both a public roasting and celebration of one's growing up, all at once.   The celebration is meant to mark this accomplishment by a growing child, while keeping them humble, and hopefully, giving them a few pointers for their future.

Great use of a coming of age food. I especially like the fact that anybody BUT a family member can cook it. As it shows that the culture values aiding one another, but also independence from the family unit as one begins to mature.
