A cool brown, furred face with huge dark brown eyes suddenly appears over a plate of simmered honey and almond venison. She has a rather bat like nose, and teeth, and ears and wings too. Kerxie are not well known in Baldur’s Gate, perhaps many haven’t even heard of them at all. A type of small bat people with strange hands and wings built into their arms.
This kerxie in particular stares proudly at her handiwork: two pieces of honeycomb leaning against each other with an almond precisely placed on top. Food was its own art, and the chef of this little restaurant, The Treetop Stove, was known for her comforting home cooking with top tier chef flavor and garnishes.
That and the fire. For a place named after trees there sure were a lot of kitchen fires. The kerxie chef seems completely undeterred by the burn marks everywhere; in fact she was probably the one who put them there.
”Lychee!! We’ve got a roasted gooseberry and hazelnut bombe for table seven!”
Broken from her focus on her masterpiece, Lychee grins at the waiter with large fanged teeth.
”On it!” Which of course meant her sues chef would be cooking those dishes.
Said sues chef is a human named Rachel. She rolled her eyes and began to prep the gooseberry, knowing full well that Lychee wouldn’t stop dressing the venison for anything.
The amount of times Rachel had to drag Lychee out of a flaming kitchen is the only reason why she paints her eyebrows on every morning. And wears a lot of hats.
Lychee drizzled honey over the venison, draping it across the white plate and over her honeycomb tower. The negative space was just as important as the display of the food and she needed to draw the eye around the entre as a whole.
The chef perks a mischievous eyebrow and points her finger. A small stream of fire shoots out of it and she lowers her view to once again be eye level with the plate while she caramelized honey.
”The meatheads are back again,” reports the waiter who frequently popped in and out of the kitchen without a sound until his yelling voice filled your giant ears.
Lychee cringes and the fire shoots off the plate onto the metal counter. The kerxie’s big eyes narrow, not at Freddie but at the “meatheads”. That’s the third time this week and it’s not even Wednesday, she thinks in a pout. Why won’t they just give up already? Freddie swears he can see little flames flicker in the brown depths of the chef’s eyes.
With a huff of annoyance, Lychee hops off of her stool and marches out of the kitchen up to the soldiers. They clearly dread being here and have a twinge of worry in their eyes.
”I don’t want to go, I already told you!” she squeaks loudly and puts her hands on her hips. This makes her wings stick out from her elbows and take up quite a bit of space.
”Miss, nobody wants to be conscripted.”
The subliminal flicker of flame in Lychee’s eyes grow and the soldiers spare a concerned glance at each other. One of them grunts and finds their courage.
“Look you dinky bat, you can’t say no. You’re coming with us. You’re joining the Flaming Fists and you’ll do as commanded.”
“I’ll show you a flaming fist,” Lychee grumbles under her breath. The diners, who knew full well what to expect from Lychee, gasp and duck under their tables.
The little kerxie, standing just above three feet tall, winds up a fist with her strange webbed hand and punches one of the soldiers in the leg. She pouts her lip and looks up at the woman with pure fire and defiance in her eyes.
The soldiers laugh at the punch, thinking this bat thing wasn’t nearly as much of a threat as Greg and Toby had made it out to be.
“Was I supposed to feel that?”
She reaches down to grab Lychee’s hand and that’s when they smell it. They pause with their hand extended while Lychee’s glare takes on a rather sly expression.
Smoke curled up the backs of the soldiers and filled their nostrils. “FIRE!” the other soldier shouts pointing and screaming at the back of the woman’s cloak.
While Lychee punched her in the leg, her other hand was hidden behind her wing. The druid took a flame from a nearby candle and moved it to the tip of the soldier’s cloak. Then it was just a simple matter of letting fire do what fire does best. Burn.
The soldiers scramble to rip off the cloak and while that’s happening, Lychee forms little balls of fire in her hands and makes shwooping noises as she sends them after the pants next. The noises were just for effect of course. The pure joy and fun was just a bonus. This spell wouldn’t catch their clothes but they didn’t need to know that.
“I’m not going anywhere! If you come back I’ll light up more than your cloak you milksops!” Lychee giggles and herds them out of the restaurant with balls of fire. The flaming fist soldiers run out screaming while trying to pat out the flames and make quite the fools of themselves.
Confident she’d be left in peace for at least the rest of the day, Lychee dusts off her shoulders and prances back to the kitchen while the onlookers under the tables stare at her in a mixture of awe and concern.
The pyro chef had a bit of a reputation around here.
