Personal history

My Familia was well off, at least compared to those poor bastards in the rest of the Combat Zone. Mi padre was an executive for a small young corporation trying to make it big and move out of the neighborhood. My mama was a waitress at a small restaurant/bar. Mama is who I take after in looks and personality. I did get a bit of business sense and an understanding of how the business worked from my dad. All born in the Combat Zone.

I have two siblings, Izzy (Isabella), a year older than me, and grew up really fast. She got me my first gun, a small old-style gun. I think they called them 6 shooters. Then there is my little bro Diego. A scrappy little kid is always getting himself into trouble. He is going to end up in jail or the morgue before he is 30. He has no patience and is always looking to make a big score.

During my growing-up years, the kids on our block would sneak over the wall into the combat zone. I don't really remember why we did it. I guess to be badasses or to prove to each other we were not scared.

Well, as you would guess, Diego and one of his less reputable friends jetted off and got into a tough scrape with some kids that were more badass than they were. Izzy, my friend Santi (Santiago), and I went looking for them.

We heard Diego's voice crying out each time he got hit. I wanted to run in and save him, Izzy held me back. Instead, we snuck up on them and saw Diego was getting beaten. We came in from two directions leaving the two bad guys only one exit. She then made a deal for their release. We outnumbered them now, and it was an easy deal to make. They kicked Diego in the head one more time and ran off.

mama would have beat Diego senseless, but he was already both. Many lessons were made over evening comidas, Diego should have listened. Izzy and I learned a lot. We both talked a lot after that. We talked a lot about what life was going to be like. We both agreed that we never wanted to live this close to "The Zone."

We had schooling, and Izzy and I both made friends, and we always listened to what others said and wanted. We have several apuestas (um how do you say,? wagers), on how our friends will turn out. We already lost two friends and crossed them off the list. We both were wrong on those two.

Diego and I were off playing when some rivals from the other block came over to cause trouble. Diego could not shut up and kept pushing. I kept trying to control him, and it ended up with one of those "el Hijos de Perras" getting killed, and I had a close call. Diego was untouched.

A week later, war broke out between the two blocks, then the policía came in and declared our streets as part of the combat zone. Of course, we knew what that meant.

Life was more complicated after that. I started working hard to find things for La Familia. I learned how to barter both products and services. Then when I was 16, Izzy left. The only note she left was a copy of our list of friends. I noticed one more had been crossed off on her side. A young boy. The one who was killed at the block war.

A few months later, Diego had joined a gang and was gone. Mama was sad at losing Isabella and even Diego. She began hovering over me. Geesh, the guilt was heavy on my soul. I never told mama that Izzy left me a note. I told her Izzy was fine, and she had to find her own path. She was smart, and she was a good person.

What? My name? It is Sebastián, but once I hit the street, I took on the Handle Tejón. I am 17 now and dealing on the street. Helping my mom and dad with their situation and trying to get us all out of this hell hole I put us in.
For three years, I have been making a name for myself. I know many people here in the city, and I have the biggest deal of my life. "Well, so far." A businessman of some small no-name corp needed some illegal tech, and I had a seller. So, I made the deal, got my cut.

After the fiesta, my parents and I lived a bit better. Then one day, I got word from a contact that some big corporation wanted me. I was not sure exactly what that meant, so I did some checking and found out the seller of the tech had stolen it. The seller, she, turned up dead. I left home. I told mama not to worry. I will be back for her wonderful Carne' Asada surprise.

On my own now. I scavenged a bit and lived on my ability to do deals. Then one night, I was driving back from a deal. I had procured the car a few deals ago. It was on its last leg, but it got me around. Anyway, I noticed that I was being followed. I knew this day would come they found me. After a chase and a shoot-out with my six-shooter, I was hurt, and the other guy, a scraggly gang-looking guy, was bleeding out fast. This was not what I expected. This was no corporate hit.

Hurt, I sought shelter at a nearby bar/restaurant. It is called Casa Metalachi. I never would not have come, if I did not need help. The owner Savanah Kuster there helped me and patched up my leg. She goes by Calypso. She entertains at the bar as well.

At first I wanted to leave, but with someone after me, Calypso talked me into staying a few days. Then it was a few weeks. I started working out of the bar. I helped Calypso out with the bar, and we became friends. I got her a few deals on stuff to help the bar. She now lets me work out of a booth there, and I have a room above the bar to crash. Some of her patrons have become contacts and helped grow my list of contacts.

Calypso is good-looking for an older woman, and we almost had a moment. But, she stopped it. We have worked together now two years and we have a developed a great working relationship. I find her frank honesty refreshing, much like I had with my sister. I have really started to get my self together working with her and I am so glad I got hurt when I did. It paid off in so many ways.

I still visit my Familia and Calypso has gotten on with my parents quite well, although it took several months before she agreed to come with me for my mama’s Carne' Asada surprise. The surprise is there is no Carne' Asada in it. Who can afford that any more. One day; one day real soon, mama will be able to buy that asada.

Contacts represents who the Fixer can reach out in order to source goods, favors, or information. The Fixer will still have to pay for these, of course.

Reach is the highest price category of items that a Fixer can always source, and if they can use their influence to gather other Fixers into creating a Night Market, which makes all price categories of items available to them for a short time. (See pg. 338 for rules on setting up Night Markets).

Haggle is the ability of the Fixer to strike a deal. When haggling with a person, you roll COOL + Trading Skill + Your Operator Rank + 1d10 against their COOL + Trading Skill + Their Operator Rank
(if they are a Fixer) + 1d10. If you succeed, you can make 1 deal of your Operator Rank or lower. Only
1 Fixer deal can be made per transaction.

Grease represents the Fixer's ability to blend into the many cultures on and off The Street; ability to know the language, social codes, and status marks for each group or culture.

Motivation

My parents and Calypso are the only true people I care about. I have learned most people cannot be trusted. You can hardly blame anyone in this time for that.

I am helping my familia out as much as I can and I want to move my familia somewhere a lot safer.

I love my job. I do not get shot at that often and I love the work. I want to do bigger deals to help those I care about.

When not working at the bar or fixing, I like to watch soccer. No specific Team, but I do like Mexico. I like them because that was what I was raised liking.
