The Beginning

by Det-Je'akine Coltane Dresden

Coltane was born under the constellation of the wolf, beneath the night sky. Just as he entered this world, Mizov passed in front of the Wolf Star. The omens were clear: he was destined to become a lycanthrope. This is unbeknownst to Coltane as he's never changed (so far) and he's never been bitten. His parents weren't the type to believe in superstition or fate. Not that they were his parents for long enough to have informed him of any such prophecy anyways. When he was no more than 6 they attempted to sell him to a slaver for a bit of coin, and most of his childhood before that was filled with neglect. A wonder he survived to the fateful day with the slaver really. And quite the turn of good fortune for Coltane.

Yes, his parents were only successful in ATTEMPTING to sell the boy into slavery for a profit, before the meeting was forcefully interrupted by a man introducing himself as Mubroscor Gradz and swiftly ending the lives of all of the slavers present at the meeting. He indicated that he had been hired to eradicate such practices whenever he may notice them and turned to leave but then seemed to realize that the parents had been intending to sell their son. He looked the young boy up and down a bit, as if appraising him. "You lot clearly aren't fit to raise a man with such potential. I'll be taking him. Let's go boy." And with that, he drug Coltane out of the life he was born into. HIs parents made no attempt to stop Mubroscor, seemingly too terrified by the whole ordeal.

Shortly there after, Coltane learned that Mubroscor was one of the remaining storied Saty-Je'ak. Coltane was to be a stable boy, and in a few years, if he earned it then a squire. Thinking back on it now, it seemed obvious that Mubroscor must have seen some sort of promise in Coltane. The path he laid before Coltane was one that paved the road to becoming Mubrocor's apprentice. Coltane still didn't know what it was that Mubroscor had seen, but he did not disappoint. Over the years he learned anything that he could in his various roles before earning the apprenticeship that Mubroscor had intended for him. All in all he acquitted himself well over the years proving adept in most things that the Saty-Je'ak Master sought to teach him. The Majokuh. Thet Hyje. The meaning of being a M'nije'ak. Until fate took a turn once again.

Another thing that Coltane had developed over the years was an affection for a certain local girl. And she him. Yafi Truelight. Their affair was a secret one, and for two good reasons. Mubroscor had forbade Coltane such interests at this stage in his life. Though he was permitted the company of whores. No, only relationships that may take his attentions away from becoming the best possible man and Saty-Je'ak. Secondly, Yafi was one of the most attractive girls in the town and the daughter of a merchant. Her hand was oft sought and coveted. Her father saw no suitor worthy and had turned many distasteful ones away and would likely have asked for Coltane's head (and found a way to get it) if he had known. And so Coltane found a way to hide a relationship with Yafi while still becoming the best Saty-Je'ak he could be (or so he thought).

The appointed date of his Oena was approaching. Coltane and Yafi had planned a meet for the night before the appointed day to settle their nerves and for good luck. Not only was the following day Coltane's Becoming, but another suitor would also be coming to call on Yafi. It was during this meet that Coltane saw smoke arising from the land that Master Mubroscor's called home when he was not out "bettering the world through various means" as he would call it. Coltane left Yafi abruptly and sent her home, wishing her good luck. What he found upon arrival home was....unpleasant. Slaughtered horses, stable boys, servants. Blood and entrails everywhere. And finally, the lifeless body of Mubroscor. Barely recognizable. Coltane felt a brief sadness before being stricken with guilt unlike he had ever known. He was supposed to have been here in his room preparing himself for the following day. After a few minutes, Coltane recognized that the guilt was smothering another emotion. Anger. Anger at himself. And rage at whoever, whatever, that had done this. He knew enough to recognize that the carnage looked like it may have been caused by canines but he had never known any to be so vicious or so large. Whatever it was, he knew of a nearby group that could help him find out and help him learn to hunt them down.

Coltane gathered his belongings. He gathered Mubroscor's Haerkuh Ja'ek Heirlooms. They had been meant to become his after he completed his Becoming the following day, and he could not leave them here to be found by others while he was away. And he may be gone a while. His destination was a clan of monster hunters he knew near by. They weren't the type to share their knowledge to just anyone. He thought it likely that he would have even more training and learning to undergo before they would help him set himself on a collision course with the murder of Mubroscor. But first, he had to say goodbye to Yafi, and so after collecting everything he needed he made for her home to tell her what had happened and where he would be going. And of course, to promise to return.

If what Coltane found at Mubroscor's home had been hard, what he found awaiting at Yafi's was soul crushing. There seemed to be a celebration going on. But Yafi did not seem happy about it. Coltane waited around for the festivities to end so that he could catch Yafi in her room. By that time he had been able to at least gather that the visiting suitor had been liked by her father. Yafi explained that she was to be wed to the man and begged for Coltane to save her. Coltane felt like he was being split down the middle. He explained where he had just come from and where he must go, promising to return and explaining that he did not know how he could save her, or the two of them from their fate. She begged him to take her with him but he refused, knowing he could not keep her safe. He left her sobbing, with quiet tears streaming down his own face as made for the camp of monster hunters.

This was all nearly 15 years ago. Coltane had spent several years with the hunters learning what they would teach him before they told him that he must earn the rest for himself. There were many different specialties in their craft, but which unique specialty would become his own had to be discovered on his own path. During those years, he attempted to stay in touch with Yafi and was successful on occasion. She seemed to grow indifferent towards him though she claimed to always be unhappy with the man she had been wed too. Coltane would promise to take her away from it one day but she would brush it off, until one day she asked him to stop contacting her entirely and insisted that she was suddenly happy and no longer wanted his friendship. This hurt Coltane and he thought it all a lie but he didn't know what else to do so he honored her whishes, and when his training with the hunters came to an end and it was time for him to set out on his own he left.

He had been traveling on his own ever since. Trying to hunt his masters killers. Over the years he learned two things. The culprits were likely lycanthropes (which had also shaped a lot of his personal hunter development as he sought the next level of unique skill). And he was never going to be successful in hunting them down without being an accepted member of society. This would mean completing his Oena.
Which is what had brought him back to Fort Hopewell and he was due to complete his Oena soon. Once he was a confirmed citizen of worth, then he may be able to make some headway on gaining access to the areas and lands necessary to hunt down the lycanthropes responsible for the death of Mubroscor. And perhaps he may finally consider himself worthy of his masters heirlooms. He had carried them with him from the day he had taken them. And he had used them to survive. He still used them to survive. But he felt dirty whenever he did. Like he was betraying his masters trust. He needed to feel like he had earned them and he had not yet. They had been meant for him only after completing the Oena. Using them before now had been cheating. Either way, when the locals of Fort Hopewell saw them, they recognized Coltane for what he was. Or what he would be after completing the Oena. Memory of his master still lingered it seemed though he doubted they knew who Coltane was. He was a weathered 37 now. Not the youthful 22 he was when he left. He wondered if his age and experience would make the Oena easier. He may still be seeking to improve his skills as a Blood Hunter, but he had been practicing the Thet Hyje and martial skills of a Saty-Je'ak for nearly 2 decades now if you counted his initial introduction training in his youth. Somehow, he still felt nervous about the whole thing.
