Notes to the Defense

by John Bastille

Charges:
1. -Murder of a Fallow Hopes Priest (lesser, accomplice to Murder)
2. -Cowardice when pursued after murder was committed.
3. -Creating Strife within the walls of Eden by instigating murders of other faiths.
4. -Consorting with the Damned (Terminus) to instigate a murder.
5. -Assaulting a Fallow Hopes held structure.

Defense:
1. I can produce a signed confession from Terminus wherein he states that not only was he
the one to kill Bynx but also will testify that he did not tell me of his plans to
murder Bynx at the time the action took place. I was under the impression the plan
was simply to kill Kamacho, which was perfectly legal under the Laws of Eden as he
was (and I believe still is) a council representative for the small council. After the
deed was done, Terminus informed me of what he had done and presented convincing
evidence that Bynx had participated in the criminal action that resulted in the death
of Private First Class Honey and the theft of the St. Joan of Arc Armory. My later
investigations would provide strong corroborating evidence to support this assertion (the
details of which I think we should object to getting into, as they are not in fact
relevant to the charges being levied and will certainly be used as an opportunity for
those in the pocket of the Guild to attempt to suss out their leak). I will be happy to
go into detail about my reasons for claiming responsibility, not the least of which was
sending the strong message that the Fallow Hopes was not under the thumb of the
criminal element, as had been the very common rumor at the time (and at personal
sacrifice to reputation and position I might add).

2. While Chaplain Fenresian may believe that the only way to conduct war is shield to
shield with a blade in hand, as is the practice of his tribe, he may wish to remember
what result that netted his tribe before plunging others towards it. History exists to be
learned from, not repeated. That said, I made myself available to Minister General
Aureleus both through letter and personal appearance, and offered to answer any
summons he may have or respond to any question he may pose honestly, so the only real
claim that can be made in this department is that I did not submit myself to mob
justice, a position which any sane person would find reasonable.

3. I'm not sure what evidence possibly exists that I instigated any such thing. There are
two such cases I am alleged to participate in, as far as I know. The most recent is the
above, which as the letter will state I believed to be a legitimate political action at the
time, and was instigated by Terminus. The second was participation in an attack on
members of the Church of Darwin by a member of their own faith (Nine; Intrafaith
violence as a means to settle political disputes being explicitly allowed under the laws
of Eden). I participated in this attack and slew Cameron, now Curie and Large
Council Representative for the Darwin faith, after confirming that He and Zell pooled
money and outside influence to bring in (non-guild) assassins from Hayven to
(successfully) murder a member of the regiment I was in command of at the time (St.
Joan). Given Chaplain Fenrisian's response to having a member under his protection
slain, it will be difficult to leverage complaint against me for doing the same without
bathing in hypocrisy.

4. Move to dismiss. No Minister General or Regiment within Eden's known history has
considered Psions to be the Damned, and it has been the explicit policy of the last
three Minister Generals to show Psions tolerance unless they act in a manner which
shows them to be agents of the Gravemind. Further, as there is no evidence that
Terminus was a Final Knight or a member of the ranks of the Undead at the time,
this accusation is entirely baseless.

5. Partially true, though the criminality is debatable. I was tasked by Minister General
Lucius with internally policing the faith as part of my position of Chaplain, a
responsibility that was not stripped until after the Hospital incident occurred. Targeting
and successfully executing members of other organizations and faiths that are otherwise
legal targets but who have been offered protection by the Hospital Regiment is a failure
of their security but not a violation of any standing Fallow Hopes tenet or policy. Who
the Hospital chooses to ally with themselves is their business, but that does not make
them immune from the political ramifications of that alliance. Further, it had been
Terminus's plan to simply flood the building with poison gas as well as a sedative,
causing nearly everyone in the building to die unconscious. He believed (not unfairly)
that the Hospital was so compromised that there was no good worth saving within it. It
was my intervention in that plan that convinced him to instead use the sedative and a
series of targeted physical strikes to eliminate Kamacho and non-Fallow-Hopes residents
who had participated in his own murder in Eerie. Indeed, if the court accepts my
above assertions about the nature of Bynx, it is my participation in this plan that
reduced the number of loyal Fallow Hopes casualties within the Hospital from 'total' to
'0'. Still, it is hard to argue I’d not participated, and I won't deny being there, so we
may end up forced to ‘cop’ to this one.
