A t E: Session 01- Epilogue

General Summary

Renaissance and Switch make a humble enough sight as they approach the city of Excel. Paired up on horseback, the two travelers from Homestead see two guardsmen watching them. Here they -- and especially Renaissance -- realise for the first of many times, that Excel will need to adopt a host of small changes to fit into this new world. The guards ask for gold as payment to enter the gates of the city. The coinage on Miranse is actually referred to as 'helms'. Not for the last time, Renaissance will be moved to mask a smile at the qualities of the city, that cause him to hold this place as special.   Wisely, Renaissance seeks out the mayor, whose name escapes him for the moment but then it has been a time since last they met and more than a world has come and gone between meetings. Later, he will remember the man's name was, and is, Lamill Goodtock. Whatever Excel might lack in sophistication, the place can look to this man to use common sense in dealing with its affairs. There are worse sorts to lead a place on a day-to-day level. It is gratifying to see his attempts to mollify and take care of the needs of the most affected townspeople. The city's sudden relocation has meant that the farms beyond the city walls have been left behind, along with outbuildings, equipment and in some cases livestock that they contained. Something to look at fixing for those that care for Excel.   Plans of this nature are interrupted by a report of an arrival. It is a day for such in this area of eastern Tighan it seems. Just outside of the city's eastern gatehouse, a steam-driven vessel has landed. Renaissance is naturally apprehensive about not only the ship but the coincidental timing of its landing here and now. This worry is not helped by the access hatch swinging open, without a greeting. Renaissance clothes himself in his 'Protector' armour of Orange for the first time as an interested party on Miranse and then steps inside.   He is greeted by the sight of four individuals. These people are evidently not native to the world, that is immediately obvious. A man calling himself Kade, leads. Ronika, a woman pilot, a combat soldier named Ghoul and a man named Mystr who navigates; are his comrades-in-arms. Kade details some facts about his coming here. Most salient of these is that he is here to find Renaissance. That is likely both welcome and odd news. Time may be needed to understand such a thing. Whatever the findings, for the moment it is a simple thing to take the four at face value, given that they undoubtedly could have inflicted some damage on homes and people should they have wished to. Renaissance takes them into the city to a place that they can get a drink and talk. Trust being a thing he gives only carefully, Renaissance warns them sternly that he can not be swayed into revealing things merely by getting him drunk! For their part the visitors from Arcithia seem only too pleased to be in a place less tumultuous than those they have recently found themselves in. Ronika in particular -- appears to be almost jovial. Part relief to be away from the constant need to be vigilant for their safety and partly because for her, this place is like something from a tale of adventure. Kade has told them many times of the Mainstay World of Miranse. Now, she is experiencing it for herself. "It's like stepping into a moving picture!", whispers Ronika to Ghoul... For his part, Ghoul is not quite so happy. This is because he spent a brief time on Miranse before. He saw little to recommend it. The change in locale has yet to colour his opinion toward the positive. He goes where Kade orders him to go. For now that is enough. Captain Ghoul is rarely of any other type of mindset. It's what has kept him alive when many around him have perished. Kade has come to value the stoicism that Ghoul frequently displays. 'Ghoul' is an apt sobriquet for a man who never relaxes his drawn countenance enough to smile.   Renaissance leads the way to a tavern he remembers. Once inside the Mangy Manticore, and having explained that a manticore is a 'monster', they are told by a server, in no uncertain terms, to use room four. The serious manner this is delivered with, is somewhat amusing. No other room but four will do, apparently. Upon entering, an 'old' acquaintance is met. Sreigorn sits inside near the room's corner, legs crossed at the ankle and relaxed as though expecting Renaissance and company for some time. Well in fact, he has been. He has paid the town guards handsomely for years for any information of any tall, well-muscled strangers entering the city... Not surprisingly, the old companions and the new, waste no time on wordy introductions or nostalgic recollections, they move straight into plans for tomorrow. This too, is like old times.   They will realise it later in the day, when the initial requirements of being leaders have been dealt with and a certain quiet comes over them. Then, with the mellowness that comes with good food and drink consumed -- perhaps someone murmurs, "...just one more glass will do me..." -- and in the amber light cast by a couple of lanterns and the obligatory fire, each will eye the person across from them and remember times gone before, when this same collective feeling would be born. Sreigorn will sagely proffer, "A group committed to a plan is a tough thing to deny. Foes will find it most difficult. This holds equally true for those that are part of it. . ."
