Flare Comp, Part 2

General Summary

It is a time of uneasy peace in two Galaxies that should never have met. The Kwi map, ancient invention of the Bendu, has become an obtainable goal for long-absent forces of conquest.

And yet: all things strive.

A small band of heroes work carefully to return to their native reality. They smuggled themselves and their allies into a hidden library repository on a crystal moon. Somewhere within this alien base is the only promise of transit back to where their destiny awaits them.

Stymied by the base's occupants, Captain Aerena Kolene and Lord Danar Vorpadaran secured themselves inside their borrowed ship as Sir Davish Tam confronted an aggressive local. Meanwhile, So'Zen Al Saba stalked through the crystalline corridors on his way to confront a great evil.

And in an inner room: the Rift . . .
. . . dims.

There's No Place Like Home

So'Zen Al Saba appears on Chalcedon in Port Nevermore. He has a tingling sensation in the horns and a case of the bends in his joints.
Aerena Kolene appears in the Kylo's Star on Monorik. She feels drunk. Someone has taped the hatch shut from the outside with quarantine tape.
Davish Tam lands on the orbital platform near the Rift. A minute later, Vance Kerplocken lands next to him. They both look like they just won the biggest bar fight in the entire sector. Davish has a palm-sized metal disk in his vest pocket, about half an inch thick. Vance is wearing on his belt a velvet-lined sheath with the hilt of a crystal-bladed sword sticking out of it. It's completely powerless and its charge port is warped.

Notes

  • The current date is probably the 11th day of the 4th month of 12731 according to the Tapani Calendar; see also Flare Comp. If only you were still in a place where Time in the Tapani Sector is relevant in some way.
  • Records indicate that the Bene Gesserit Order came to the Tapani Sector in local year 5420.
  • Every Tapani Imperium schoolchild was taught -- though few probably remember even a handful of years later -- that the "Butlerian Jihad" happened around the beginning of the Twelfth Millenium, less than two hundred years before the end of the Dynastic Era.

Author's notes:

So: I just ran the Mostly Serious Epic side of our Space Opera campaign through The Wizard of Oz, and I don't think anybody picked up on it. I'm very proud of myself for that. The Rift at Chalcedon was already a bright green light; I made the color of Triune's divine power -- a local equivalent of part of the Force -- be yellow, as they're following the will of Triune and the beacon set by It. Venture-Captain Naiaj is the leader of "the Munchkins" (since she's a gnome), and the nameless hippy-dippy tiefling followers of Desna -- who thought they had summoned Vance Kerplocken to grant their dreams -- played the part of the Lullaby League. At one point Davish Tam and Aerena Kolene blustered their way past the Lollipop Guild, a group of Vesk seated around a table wearing fezzes.

Catysus Phymen was the Cowardly Lion, obviously. Baymax was the Scarecrow and Muinmos was the Tin Man.

I especially enjoyed using the Drift Cuttles as my Flying Monkeys, even though they hardly ever got a chance to swarm in.

Regardless: The Team did reach their Emerald City at the Osiris Branch Library, where they found that the Great and Powerful Oz was really only Graeder Flentarrix, a stiff and disgruntled Keeper of Records still resentful that he got assigned to a Branch Library instead of the Great Library post he thinks he deserved. Meanwhile, the real threat is an Eborrean named Vobelt Qhur Zasdar who makes no apologies for how much he would like to eat some of the Team's brains and use the rest to get himself back to a comfortable place of power. Good thing the Team brought along their anti-Wicked Witch tactics!
