@Mentions automatically work with Nicknames and Alternative Names

mentions mention quality-of-life articles links

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

The mention system requires manually changing the link's text when using nicknames or common alternative names. This can take up a lot of time and quickly become tedious when using a lot of mentions to link articles together. This is especially true with articles like Characters, Organizations, Plots, and Historic Events that naturally reference a lot of other articles.   Many article templates already have a "Nickname" or "Alternate Names" section built in. This would simply allow the mention system to make use of them without having to edit any text.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

In practice, the mention system will search though Alternative Names like articles or tags. However, unlike with tags, the system will AUTOMATICALLY link to the article that Alternative Name is attached to.   EXAMPLE: Say I have an organization article called "The Empire". Its two alternative names are "The Fifth Empire" and "The Royal Empire of Albion". The first alternate is used by foreigners and the second is used by nobles.   I can type "Fifth" and the mention system will recommend something like "The Fifth Empire > The Empire (Organization)", showing both the alternate name and the article its linking to.   When I press enter, a mention to The Empire will appear, but its text will automatically say "The Fifth Empire". Or I can type "Albion" to get a mention to the same article, but its text will say "The Royal Empire of Albion".   If you use mentions as often as I do, this could really make World Anvil just that much more convenient.

What are other uses for this feature request?

The feature would open the doors for making nicknames, aliases, shortenings, abbreviations, synonyms, demonyms, slang, and other common alternative article names all easier to link to. For heavy mention users, World Anvil would become a lot more convenient and time saving.

The Team's Response

This suggestion did not reach the required threshold of community support.   This suggestion will also be declined on the grounds that the tagging system is alredy robust enough to allow you to search using said tags to find anything you need and has the ability to use what is above called alternative name as a tag.

USE THE TAGS

Adding additional fields does not make things easier, it makes things more cluttered, harder to manage and less centralised
