List Template Prompts in the Same Order as Finished Article

article editor template

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Currently, in the article editor, the template prompt sections don't display in the same order as they will appear in the completed article (for example, the History section in the Sapient Species template appears first in the article, despite being listed near the end of the template editor). This makes keeping information organized difficult and frustrating.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

This feature suggests for the prompt sections to be reordered so they'll be in the same order as they will appear in the completed article.

Further feedback

The two views edit/presentation started in par the changes happened progressively as the community changed their thoughts on what is the proper "grouping".   This task is a very time intensive and labourious task that will require more support to give it the resources required

Agreed this would make templates make more sense and easier to understand and fill-up from the user experience.
I'd like to add, in regards to others' suggestions in regards of placement (main versus sidebar) that there used to be a little icon that would indicate whether something would go on the sidebar or not. If that is not global across the templates or it has been removed, I do think it was useful in showcasing sidebar location of certain template areas.

I agree with Vertixico.   I like to have some kind of narrative flow to an article, knowing what info I've already given when writing a section further down to show how different aspects connect to each other. It can get confusing, if the text is 'out of order' while I am editing it.

It's not do or die, because obviously we CAN go to the published article and see how it's all actually laid out. However, I would love to not have to go back and forth to check and idk about you guys, but I do not have the order anything close to memorized to get is right the first time

This would be a lot of work, but even just adding to the little question mark/help box next to each section that would tell where it will located would be helpful.

There is a LOT of visibility missing in the Article Templates on where stuff will end up in the article, I agree. This also includes
  • "what gets into the sidebar and what does not"
  • "where can you use bbcode and where not"
  • "where can you only enter a set amount of characters"
  • Currently this information is very spotty, incomplete, and I believe in rare cases even incorrect.   I believe this request will be a good chance to clean up one of the most central systems, Dimi. I know, that is not fun work but it should be done :)

This would be tremendously helpful, along with little notes in parentheses when a field goes to sidebar. I usually have to put placeholder text in to figure out what's going where before I write the article.
