Universe to Contain Worlds

New Feature Addition · World presentation layer · Created by Drackmoor
declined
Create a universe that contains all the worlds that belong in it, where they are linkable, but all have their own contained space. Also, to be able to have articles contained outside of and relating to the universe, rather than a particular world.

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Many elements in the current World Anvil are set up to make it very undesirable to create a universe as its own "world" with all the worlds contained as locations within it.
  • Time -- Different worlds run on different clocks and calendars.
  • Organization -- Organize different species, cultures, etc. into their origin worlds where, apart from interplanetary migration, they would be contained. Being able to easily identify where a certain currency, technology, language, or art originated. Maps should be related to their particular world and not others.
  • Unified Linking -- The ability to (easily) link to things belonging on another world, and view a particular world, or the entire universe on a page.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

A universe able to contain worlds would keep all the worlds and the things on them separate, while allowing them to also be connected when they do migrate off-world.

What are other uses for this feature request?

To contain articles and categories outside of worlds. To be able to track time in cultures that don't reckon time using the same system, such as people above ground who reckon by the sun, and below grounders who reckon based on root growth or the flow of underground rivers.

The Team's Response

I am sorry but I cannot understand this request and I feel that the author has possibly misunderstood the way that World Anvil works.   In World Anvil a "World" is a project, it can contain as little as a single house or as much as hundreds of worlds/planets. We have many SCIFI worlds that do that already.   Unless I am mistaken there is no functionality that is missing at this point to make this possible.

Much of it is already possible with the current toolset - categories, tags, separate timelines, custom display dates on historical entries or character articles.   However, I've also found myself wanting to focus on one culture in my star system and getting annoyed by e.g. the search bringing up articles from all the others. So separating them on demand would indeed be useful.   Perhaps one solution could be a global "sub-world mode" that filters everything by a particular tag? We could have a place to define which sub-worlds exist and which tag identifies each of them. Then there could be a dropdown which would let us - and maybe even our readers - switch between "everything" (i.e. unfiltered view), "planet XYZ" (i.e. only showing things tagged "xyz") or "ABC culture" (i.e. only showing things tagged "abc").

This would be very useful for the book series I'm writing, which involves different planets in the same universe. While the planets are relatively similar (all need to be able to support Earth-like life), there are some small differences, like the number of days in one year differ slightly. Allowing one universe with multiple linkable worlds would also help with organizing the articles. Currently, I've made different categories for each planet, but something like this would be much more useful.
