What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

There is a long list of missing functionality (see below) that limits organization templates, relgions and geopolitical organizations most of all. It is unsatifying that you cannot do many things that seem standard, for example, like link to documents, such as a government's constitution, or a religious holy text, the the bible.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

This list has a suggested actionable for each problem (see below).

What are other uses for this feature request?

Massive improvments to WA user quality of life, expanding the utility and depth of organization templates, adding very important missing options (governemnt types, such as republics), improving the search function, and more.   Improvements to the Religion, Country, Organization, & Military Unit/Formation Templates

Section 1: Religion

Problem 1A - Deities can only be a selected group of individual characters articles.   Actionable 1A - You should be able to select an organization template article (Religion, Pantheon) that would take you to the article covering the entire pantheon.   Problem 1B - There is no link section for sacred places / holy sites (Jerusalem, Mount Olympus, the Church of X, the place where famous martyr X died).   Actionable 1B – You should be able to link buildings template articles, geography template articles, and settlement template articles.   Problem 1C - You can’t link to documents template articles.   Actionable 1C - There should be a link section for related sacred documents (The Quran, The Bible) or other significant religious texts. (I have to emphasize this one as something incredibly significant to religions.)   Problem 1D - You can’t link to denominations (Sunni, Shia, Catholic, Protestant).   Actionable 1D – Add option to link denomination organization articles or other sub-groups or related groups to a religion.   Problem 1E - In the religion tab, you can’t tag anything other than “Deities.”   Actionable 1E - You should be able to identify related religious characters and organizations (Founders, martyrs, saints, philosophers, prophets, holy orders, cults).   Problem 1F - In the articles & categories page, you cannot use the search function for “Religion,” unless you apply a tag in the tags section. This means that if you fail to tag an article, misspell the tag ([sic] Relgion), then it won’t appear in your search and the article can be lost.   Problem 1F (cont.) - Sorting articles into a category has the same flaws as above, since it can accidently be put in the wrong category, so your religion might appear in ethnicities or language and you would not know without opening every category manually. (This may sound like a stupid user error, which is true, but it can waste hours of time trying to find out what happened to your article because it vanished and it won’t appear in your searches).   Problem 1F (cont.) - Religions do not appear in the “Browse by Type” section of the articles & categories page because they all fall under the template sorting tag “Organizations.” This is useless because there are nearly 200 types of articles that are considered organizations, and browse by type does not filter the results enough to effectively find religions. This is problem becomes exponentially worse the larger and more detailed your world is, and the more content under “organizations” you add, the more you are punished for it.   Problem 1F Actionable - A possible solution to the sorting and search problem can be to make the search function detect more information about an article template. If you start and organization template, there is a “type” drop-down with options labeled “geopolitical, military, religious.” If the search could detect and article that selected the “religious” type, this would solve the problem.   Problem 1F note - The above complaints about sorting, tagging, and searching also apply to the below section 2 regarding geopolitical articles and others under the organization template.

Section 2: Countries (Nations, Kingdoms, etc.)

Problem 2A – There is no section for foundational documents (constitution, charter, royal decree, declaration of independence)   Actionable 2A - A section linking to document template articles would be useful. Note, the ability to link document articles to other article templates would also be useful.   Problem 2B - An organization leader can only be a specific character article.   Actionable 2B - You should be able to select an organization template for a group of people. (example: Switzerland is ruled by a Federal Council of 7 members and the position of “President of the Swiss Confederation” rotates among the 7 councilors on a yearly basis). A government “leader” can be more than one person.   Problem 2C - Currently we have limited options for complex governing systems and leader(s) types. You can’t link to a senate/parliament or other organization article representing supporting bodies of the government in the generic or geopolitical tabs. You have sections for the head of state and head of government, but they must be characters and can’t be organizations.   Actionable 2C – Add section for more details on government bodies such as senate/parliament or legislature like the Holy Roman Empire’s “Imperial Diet,” or other electorates. Allow heads of state and government to be organizations.   Problem 2D - There is a legislative body and judicial body section, but no executive body section.   Actionable 2D – Add a section for the executive branch of government.   Problem 2E - You can’t show a ruling dynasty, history of dynasties, emperors, or historical eras of a specific country on its article page as seen on wiki pages such as Imperial Japan and the Roman Empire.   Actionable 2E – Add a “historical era” section, and a section for listing past emperor’s, leaders, dynastic rules, or other organization who have previously ruled the country (with start and end dates).   Problem 2F - You can choose an “economic system” but its lacking many actual economic systems. (Capitalism, communism, socialism, feudalism—it was an economy too).   Actionable 2F – expand economic system with more specific and accurate details. Such as mercantilism, capitalism, communism, socialism, feudalism.   Problem 2G - You can select a “parent organization” but you can’t select a “child organization.” This means a subsidiary relationship only shows backwards. An article will show if they are the subject/vassal/territory of a parent. But if the organization is the parent, you can’t input its children or occupied territories/organizations.   Actionable 2G – add “child organization” so that you can clearly show what organizations are under this organization.   Problem 2H – You can a put geographic location for an organization, but not other geographic locations (plural). The British, Spanish, French, and Japanese Empires and others spanned the globe across multiple islands and continents.   Actionable 2H - This could be fixed with the above suggested child organizations for Geopolitical, colonies or Geopolitical, protectorates. You should be able to show the reach of an empire beyond one specific location. Allow multiple locations and tagged organization articles.   Problem 2I – Many government, power structure, and economic systems are missing from the drop downs. Most significantly, there are no republics (except for “banana republics”). There needs to be options for real republics. Constitutional republic, Democratic republic, Federal republic, Parliamentary republic, crowned republic. Rome was a Diarchic republic before an empire. Greece is currently a Unitary parliamentary republic and is known for its historical republics. The United States is a federal republic. This is of concern for me because I want to make a “crowned republic” but that option is currently not available.   Actionable 2I - Add republics as a form of government. Add the many varieties of republics.   Actionable 2I (Suggested List of Republic Types) –   Commonwealth Crowned republic Constitutional republic Democratic republic Federal republic Mercantile republic Parliamentary republic Republic, other

This is a personal gripe, but there is no option to add titles for the head of state and head of government the same way that you can assign a title to a generic organization leader.

This seems like an overwhelming laundry list. If I were to receive the suggestion like this, I think my brain might just melt.   But just because a suggestion is phrased badly, doesn't mean it doesn't have merit. Let me do my best to help group these suggestions in a way that makes it all a bit less complex, suggesting a few alternate implementations:   1) Suggestion that Organization templates be able to link to related Document articles, such as the Bible (religion,) the Declaration of Independence or the Magna Carta (government,) or the Articles of War (military).   2) Suggestion that Organizations be able to link to Significant Figures (Person articles). This would cover prophets, saints, heroes, and so forth.   3) Suggestion that Organizations be able to link to organizations above them, such as a ruling body (ie. The Admiralty Board for the Royal Navy, dynasties for a country, the Celtic Pantheon for Celtic Druids, etc.) -- and also, organizations below them (ie. denominations or cults for religions, branches of government, etc.) *One might argue that Organization Trees already accomplish this, but you can do this in Rank articles, so why not here too? Can't hurt.*   4) Expand some of the drop-down menu items for Economic Systems and Governments. I can't disagree that the absence of socialist economic systems and feudalism in economies is a large gap. I realize that it's not possible to add every type of governmental system, but perhaps a few expansions, or an option to fill in the field yourself, might be a good idea.   5) The ability to add multiple Geographic Locations, to reflect colonial powers, militaries, and large and widespread religions.   I'm ignoring the historical era related aspects, because I know that Chronos will almost certainly address them already.   It's true that almost all of this can be done with BBCode and cleverness, child articles, etc., but this would make it cleaner, easier, and more accessible. I would find all of these additions handy, even though I have found alternative ways to shoehorn almost all of them at one point or another. I am sure others would too.

This is a really great list, and well get people to think about how their worldbuilding links together with other articles in ways that are not pushed by the templates currently. Templates are also meant to be prompts and guides and suggestions, after all, for those seeking that additional help. If some of these are not actionable I am sure Dimi will let us know and still work the others. This has my vote.

I'm happy to see accessibility being brought up.   That said, it seems you capitalize the time it would cost you to learn a few bbcode commands and type them in all your articles - which I mean, fair enough. If that's not where you want to put your time and energy, that seems like a valid concern. Also, I get that you would like it to be more intuitive, so that you don't have to spend time on that in the first place. Considering world anvil has one main dev, though, i think we might have the same amount respect for his time. If he has to prioritize your 18 feature requests in one, there's a lot he won't be able to do.   There's many other feature requests and things that might be nice, let alone the things on the roadmap. For me it's a case of not enough bang for your buck in this feature request

To those of you on the 'do it yourself' team, I shall calmly say this:   Not everyone is a coding expert. Nor does everyone necessarily have a ton of time.   Additionally, just because someone has, say, a Grandmaster Subscription, doesn't mean that they are made out of money for a coder to do what they cannot do themselves (yes, I use the word 'cannot,' and not 'won't,' because there are people who legitimately cannot).   A Grandmaster sub is $16 a month. That is not an expensive sub, especially when the average subscription price these days is $20. For those of us at and below the poverty line (myself included), $16 is still noticeable. That's $16 I'm not able to put to anything else, because I want to support WorldAnvil however I can.   Coders. Are. Expensive. And rightly so.   Coding is time-consuming to learn, not remotely easy for those without an innate knack for it, and some people just don't have the time or energy (or, in some cases, the mental capacity at all - should the mentally disabled be excluded from accessible worldbuilding?), while those who do, and who opt to sell their services, have to price themselves according to the time and effort involved and the demand on their services.   While not all of these suggestions are particularly necessary, they overall streamline user experience and help provide prompts to work with. As such, I support the overall bulk of the OP suggestion, though perhaps not all aspects of the suggestion need to be implemented.   As for the concern about accessibility to those new to WorldAnvil, I would like to suggest the creation of "Lite" versions of the templates - more barebones templates, which are the default accessible and then in world settings you can set the whole world's templates to the 'advanced' (aka, more field-filled) versions.   That would leave newbies less likely to be overwhelmed, while providing assistance to more advanced worldbuilders who do not have the time, energy, or capacity to code whole new templates on their own.

Voting both to voice my support, and to spite the "Nyeeeh, you can just do it yourself with bbcooooooode~!" people. Not everyone has the time, ability, or inclination to learn how to do that all from scratch.

Some of these might be better covered as in-line references in existing sections. However, I don't buy the "you can already do this manually" argument. We can theoretically use the blank article template for everything and create every part from scratch. Templates exist to help you think about possibilities and there are some excellent points here for connections that one might not otherwise automatically think of.   It's worth going through these suggestions and consider each one.

You can rebuild the template however you want using the BBCode and their associated buttons and I've done exactly that by using headers and other things to make the articles appear the way I want with the Vignette. (and for master+ subscription ranks, there's sections like sidebars and the footers) The template prompts are not required to be filled out, and you don't have to use them at all. Most of the BBCode you get access to with the buttons (and ones without buttons) are available to all users. You can check out the Codex article about them as this link! I recall there being a suggestion in the past for something similar for a drag-and-drop arrangement, but there was a really reasonable explanation for why a drag and drop would likely not happen.

I like the sound of a lot of these parts, but I must vote against because of 3 reasons.   1: This isn't a single suggestion, but a massive multi overhaul, so doesn't seem to fit as less than a dozen suggestions.   2: The extra amount of prompt-fields that would only apply in some cases, could become incredibly overwhelming to many users.   3: There are many ways you can add extra fields, extra links, etc.: Custom key-value pairs and making your own templates already allow for way more customization where needed. In the end, there's only so many training wheels you can put onto a bike before it becomes uncontrollable.

Honestly, it sounds like you just want to be lazy and not do the work yourself.   You can literally do all of this with just using BBCode like headers and key::value.   Besides, if doing this manually everytime bothers you so much, use your Grandmaster subscription perk to make a new article template for yourself with all of these changes.

It would be nice to search by organization type, such as religion.   However, that is a ton of extra prompts to put into the organization template and wade through. The fields that are there, the options that are there, are suggestions. You can always add your own sections and your own forms of government using headers and/or key::value pairs. You can link to literally anything you want that way. Ex:   --Important Documents::@doc1[br]@doc2-- will yield
    Important Documents
    doc1
    doc2
You can add your own Historical Era section using an h1 or h2 header in the vignette or footer. Same with any other section you feel is missing. You can also create a timeline and link it to the article.
