Not necessary on every template, but off the top of my head, I'd say Character, Location, Organization, and Geography would put this to a lot of use.
Personally, I would prefer this as the top field in the sidebar content panel, but a built-in field would be amazing.
A dedicated subheader with a lil' IPA keyboard would be fantastic
Some sort of easy and accessible implementation of IPA transcriptions for names would be appreciated as well, for those who know how to use it.
Toblin's party-pooping aside ;) I can see lots of uses for this but the ability to add voice clips I think is beyond the scope of ability. I believe this was brought up in either IS Chat or Sage Workshop, but basically, if I recall correctly, Dimi said this would be a security nightmare. To host all the millions of sound files this would require (reminder there are a million and a half distinct users on World Anvil as of last I heard, which is probably more now) is a logistical terror beyond the scope of the Framework, and the security problems with imbedding them from another site is too much to handle (I remember there being some screaming involved at the thought). But, all in all, I can really see the use in this, especially if it supports IPA and non-english characters, such as accents.
While nice, I don't see this as a necessary upgrade requiring dev time as you can already make this easily using the tools that already exist, such as adding a key::value pair to the sidebar yourself or using aloud, quote boxes or, if you're a grandmaster, custom containers. There are already ample ways to achieve what you want within the current framework. Devoting dev time to this seems unnecessary.
I think this would also be great if (like others have said before me) this could be linked to another site or hosting site for soundclips so the word could also be heard.
As a student of linguistics this feature would be very helpful and truly appreciated.
I have seen people use the subheaders for pronunciation information. This seems like a better option, as it allows for regular subheaders too.
Interesting idea. It's already possible to do something similar in the sidebar or using headers etc but I think that as an extention to the title (in a smaller font) I think this would be great! Especially if it was IPA supported and had a little speaker icon you could click on for a sound-bite! - I assume both of these things would have to be done by the user though which isn't a problem for me and I still think would be benefitial!
Okay, I see where you're going with this. At first I was thinking, "But... the dictionary section for the constructed language template has a pronunciation field for every individual word, so...?" and "We can already do this with tooltips," which are detailed in the Design Tags Reference, which you can click on in the sidebar of every article editing screen... but yeah, okay - as something that appears as part of a header or subheader, yes, this would be handy. Bonus points if we can use both American pronunciation guides, as illustrated above, AND IPA. :D
I agree with redbeardcreator--I strive to include pronunciation into articles, but I would like this better.
I already add pronunciation to most of my articles... this could make it easier.
I would also add that there could be a field for an audio clip to play you pronouncing the word as well.
