map maps organization category categorization organize sort folder folders sorting filter filters tag tags new feature addition improvement search

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Currently, there is no way to sort or categorize maps outside of using tags, which may serve as a means of assisting the search for a specific type of map, but does not allow for a filtered view without manual text input. There isn't any list of existing tags to reference on the map page, so forgetting which one applies to a map you're looking for is as helpful as having no tags in the first place. This situation would be as easy as forgetting whether you used the plural, singular, past-tense, or current-tense form for any given tag. In short, the current system is serviceable but not convenient.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Being able to sort maps through a folder system (identical or at least similar to article categories) would allow users with a high number of maps to better search through their existing content. Alternatively, tags could be re-worked to act in a similar way to image galleries (in that you can assign one asset to multiple folders/categories). This change would also be an improvement, so long as there is a list of existing tags on the map page for quick and concise reference. The point is to make an organization system that doesn't rely on information that isn't visible on a surface level.

What are other uses for this feature request?

This feature could open the door to additional features, such as folder-based permissions for map-making. Suppose there is a situation where one content creator wishes to collaborate with another. In that case, they could create a map folder with permissions set to allow only this collaborator to add and edit content. Additionally, it could serve as a way to automatically move maps that are a work-in-progress from a private folder to a public folder upon completion. This method would be quicker than going into each map one by one and swapping the individual entities from private to public.   I'd like to close this out by saying I absolutely love this toolset. The World Anvil team does an amazing job, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this project in some way. Thank you for your consideration!   P.S. I'm sorry if this ends up being a duplicate request; I couldn't find anything in the list of existing requests that seemed to mention this particular subject.
